EASTERN STATES.
A distressing Misfortune.
Island Pond, Vt., May 20.
There have been nine deaths so
.far of children who drank from the
poisoned brook. Edward Morse
lost two, John Aldrich three, Fred
Simpson one, L. Wilson one, Mr.
Park one, John Cole one. Others
:annot live. Potato tops, poison
ed by Paris green, thrown into the
brook, are regarded as the cause
of the poisoning, rather than the
carcasses of dead animals. Terri
ble distress prevails, and work is
suspended- Twenty-seven chil
dren were poisoned from drinking
from the brook. The farmer who
allowed the carcasses to be thrown
in will be arrested. The bodies
of the children soon decompose
and are quickly buried.
Island Pond, Vt., May 30
Two more children of John Aid
rich have died from drinking of the
poisoned brook, making five, his
entire family. Mrs. Aldrich is
insane.
FOREIGN NEWS.
The lAitc jYaval ILsntcr.
London, May 30. the Chilean
minister has received a telegram
stating that the Chilean ship of
war Emeralda became disabled,
and her captain fired the magazine
to prevent her falling into the
iiands of tlie enemy.
The X2ru.pt sou ofiEtna.
London, May 30. The eruption
of Mount JEtna increases in force.
The quantity of ashes thrown out
is somewhat less, but the volume
of vapor has greatly increased in
density. Wednesday night a
number of brilliant balls of fire
were thrown to a sreat hi&lit and
burst aloft like rockets, emitting
a fiery shower. A stream of lava
is flowing, apparently in the di
rection of Randazza, but the exact
line has not yet been verified. Dur
ing the whole of Wednesday night
loud reports like the roiling of ar
tillery was heard.
Insect riagnc in Ilussia.
New York, Mav 30. Russian
grain crops are said to be suffering
from the ravages of a small insect
which propagates very rapidly.
It is the same insect for which two
years ago, a reward of ten copecks
was offered for every quart col
lected, and ten million roubles
paid out in accordance with this
offer. One-third of 'the entire
wheat crop of southern Russia is
now threatened. Very little is yet
known of the habits or customs of
the insect.
PACIFIC COAST NEWS.
San Francisco, May 30. The
autopsy on Troy Dye disclosed a
healthy condition of the brain.
Victoria Sews.
Victoria, May 30. The sum
mer suits for the city police were
placed in the hands of a Chinese
tailor to be made, but the city
council passed a resolution con
demning the transaction and the
order was canceled.
The Standard thinks we should not
complain of wooden ships for salmon
export so long as the cargo by the Geo.
F. Muntz turned out well. Very like
ly, brother; but presume you go on and
enumerate all the wooden ships which
have turned out cargoes good and bad,
then the iron ones, good and bad, and
the difference would be so perceptible
that a man with less than half an eye
would be compelled to decide with
The Astorian's view. If the writer
in the Standard had been better post
ed with regard to the condition of the
cargo turned out of the Muntz, as well
as the cargoes of the Titan, Alhert,
etc., he might have written differently
at this time. We will take pleasure
in presenting the figures for his con
sideration, should it bii deemed neces
sary to do so.
HW Monkeys aro Captured
The ape family resembles man.
Their vices are human. They loe
liquor and fall. In Darfour and
Senar the natives make a ferment
ed beer, of which the monkeys are
passionately fond. Aware of this
the natives go to the parts of the
forest frequented by the monkeys,
and set on the ground calabashes
full of the enticing liquor. As
soon as the monkey sees and tastes
it, he utters loud cries of joy that
soon attracts his comrades. Then
an orgie begins, and in a short
time they will show all degrees of
intoxication. Then the negroes
appear. The few who came too
late to get fuddled escape. The
drinkers are too far gone to dis
trust them, but apparently take
them for larger species of their
own genus. The negroes take
some up and these begin to weep
and cover them with kisses. When
a negro takes one by the hand to
lead him off, the nearest monkey
will clins: to the one who thus
finds a support and endeavor to go
on also. Another will grasp at
him, and so on, until the negro
leads a stajrsrerin": line of ten or a
dozen monkeys. When finally
brought to the village they are se
curely caged up and gradually
sobered down ; but for two or
three days a gradually diminishing
supply of liquor is given them, so
as to reconcile them by degrees to
their state of captivity.
TJirwiso Action.
The legislature of Ohio has just
done a very injurious thing, which
will be apt to react upon the demo
cratic party. At the last muni
cipal election in Cincinnati the
republicans elected all the officers,
excepting only the Judge of the
Police- court; their triumph in
cluded the board of pubic works.
This board the legislature has
abolished, and given the power of
appointing a new board to the
Judp-e of the Police court. No
argument was used for this action
other than "political expendiency."
Some of the most influential demo
cratic members of the legislature,
foreseeing the damage that would
be done to the party by abolishing
the republican board, protested
against it. The measure is de
nounced, also, by leading demo
cratic merchants of Cincinnati as
uncalled for and injurious. A
democratic paper, in commenting
upon the affair, remarks: "The
republicans mourn the loss of a
board of public works in Cincinnati,
but rejoice with justifiable con
fidence in the prospects of gaining
a legislature that will elect a
United States senator."
A recent press dispatch from 2s ew
York, states that subscriptions were
opened Saturday to the stock of a.
company to be formed to lay a sub
marine cable from the Pacific coast to
Hawaiian islands and Japan. One
capitalist headed the list with a sub
scription of 100,000. A subscription
of 1,000,000 is expected from the
Hawaiian government.
