ASTORIA. OREGON
I. C. IREIjAXJ Editor.
"WEDNESDAY May 2,S, 187!).
CITIZENS MASS MEETING.
A mass meeting of the citizens of
Astoria will be held in this city, at the
Court-house, on
SATURDAY EVENING NEXT,
May 3Isf , 1879,
To take into consideration matters
connected with the proposed railroad.
Every citizen of Astoria, and the
country surrounding, are earnestly re
quested to be present at this meeting.
Wooden Yessels for Shipping Salmon
It is the opinion of some of orr
heaviest salmon packers that their
goods should not be shipped in wooden
vessels. They claim that they have
lost heavily by shipping in wooden ves
sels. The salmon that are perfectly
sound, so far as workmanship could
make them, are rusted through, from
the effects of steam from the bilge wa
ter. These rusted tins are always
charged to the Astoria fisheries, upon
examination in Liverpool.
It has been suggested by one' deeply
interested in the business, that as some
of the agents are forcing wooden ves
sels on the canneries, it would be well
to have some united action on the part
of the cannerymen in this matter. We
think it would be nothing more than
just to this very important interest, for
the cannerymen to meet, and agree up
on a form of contract that shall exclude
the shipment of salmon in wooden ves
sels. Agents having nothing to lose,
and everything to gam, would
probably object to it, but it would
result in shipments by tight, well
ventilated iron vessels; and protect
the fair name of the popular Co
lumbia river salmon. "We urge the
suggestion upon the attention of those
of our readers most directly interested.
Quick Work.
Mr. Kinne, the general adjuster
of losses by the insured in the London,
Liverpool and Globe, and the North
British and Mercantile insurance com
panies, of which Messrs. A. Yan Dusen
& Co. are agents at Astoria, left this
city yesterday for The Dalle5. On
the morning of Monday the 19th inst.,
Messrs. Trenchard & Upshur's store
in this city was wholly and totally de
stroyed by fire. They curried an in
suranceof 10,000 in the above men
tioned companies, which were the only
companies represented in the losses.
Mr.Kinne arrived here from San Fran
cisco on the steamship State of Califor
nia, on the Saturday following the tire.
He proceeded at once to adjust the
loss; and by noon of Monday Messrs.
Trenchard & Upshur had their checks
on bank for same. Besides being
quick work, that is admirable. All
insurance companies doing business in
Astoria may be, and no doubt are, re
liable; but look at this for an example
for promptness. We hoped to meet
Mr. Kinne in -Astoria for a few days,
but the fire at The Dalles called him
away. It pays to be insured in the
London Liverpool and Globe, and the
North British and Mercantile. Our
jolly neighbor Yan Dusen is about as
gratified with the results, and possibly
more so, than if he had paid the losses
out of his own pocket. But give up
to Cajsar the things which belonjj to
Ciesar; the prompt adjustment must
be placed to to the credit of those
sterling companies.
The homoeopathic report on the
yellow fever epidemic has been
made by an investigating commit
tee to the Indianapolis Institute.
Information was received from
homoeopathic physicans through
out the infected region. It was
found that the usual remedies used
were as follews: For the first
period, aconite, belladonna, bryo
nia and gelsemium; second period,
crotalus, or, in the suppression of
urine, cantharis, stramonium and
apis; third period, arsenicum, ar
gentum nitricum, carbo vegetalus,
china and cuprinji. The death
rate is given as about G per ceut.
