Mav21st. It was about .)o clock in the
nftJrnoi,n that a roaring sound of
I noise was heard over in Washington
! territorv. This was ten minutes in
advauce of the tcitije,st, which struck
the Columbia river, followed upstream
a short distance. and thence
south in the vicinity of Fairiw church
on the Columbia slough. The storm
covered a strip of country about two
J miles wide, and was accompanied by
heavy thunders and sharp lightning.
Jt lasted about half an horn, and is
described by Air. Dunbar as a scene
of iudt'scrihahh' fury and terror. The
:r nind was left cover d to the depth
of two inches with hail, some of which
measured two and one-half inches in
circumference. It had a disastrous
eifect on crops and fruit, batting down
fields of growing grain and leaving
thetn badly cut up. while nearly all
the black berries, currants, cherries
and apples were lieateit from the trees
and vines. The clover fields apjH?ar

crly potatoes, strawberries, etc., are
actually demolished. In some instan
ces windows are broken. Passing south
from there ihe storm seemed t join
forces with black clouds coming from
some other direction, and passed on
like a messenger of rain.
The velocity of this storm and its
fierceness may le judged from the
fact that one hour after crossing the
Columbia river it swept over Salem,
fifty miles distant. The direction of
the storm for fifty nrlcs was southwest
by south. It was proceeding with mi
aliatcd fun when it reached Salem,
and must have left a swa-h of devas
tation for all that distance, of a mile
and half to two miles wide, and no
