The Dalles Conflagration.
Origin oS?ic Fire All tlie Ho
tels tesii ne Small one Gone.
LOSSES ESTIMATED AT $200,000.
The
Res is I of a Careless Em
ploye in a lEotel.
Preparations will be Made to Re
build at once.
The Dalles fire originated in the
Pioneer hotel, and was caused by
the carelessness of a waiter in the
oil room, who was smoking or
lighting a lamp. The lire broke
out at twenty minutes past four
and raged for three hours. Little
water was to be had.
The fire advanced with great
rapidity, and there was utmost
consternation. It seemed for a
time that nothing could prevent
the destruction of the entire town.
Buildings melted away with al
most inconceivable rapidity. All
the hotels in town, with the excep
tion of one small one, are gone.
The "Walla Walla hotel, the" Pio
neer, the Empire, and more unfor
tunate still, the Umatilla house,
are all gone. Ilandley & Sinnott
lose $40,000. It is impossible to
ascertain as yet the amount of loss
es and insurance. The whole loss
cannot be less than two hundred
thousand dollars. It is a severe
blow to the town, and yet there
are evidences of courage and de
termination to make effort at once
to repair this calamitous loss. The
town is a business point and must
at once rebuild.
Storm in Salem.
ireat Destruction of Property.
On the afternoon of the 21st
Saletn was visited by a hail storm
of uprecedented violence. The
place was deluged with water, and
property damaged to the extent
of several hundreds of dollars.
Among the losses ennumerated in
the Statesman are many prominent
places of business, including the
Ohemeketa hotel, J. W. Weather
ford, Murphy & Grossman. Hail
fell to the depth of two inches.
.About b p. m. a dark cloud came
down from the east preceded by
frequent claps of thunder and with
an ominous roar, soon the storm
burst upon the city. Immense
hail stones or small icebergs
came crashing down like the
breaking loose of a glacier
over the edge of a precpice, so to
speak, and the rain poured after
Noachian style. For more than
thirty minutes the storm
Svith unabated furv.
raged
The Columbia River
Jacksonville Sentinrl.
In many respects the Columbia
river is the greatest on the conti
nent. Fourteen hundred miles
above its mouth it is as large as
the Sacramento river is at Rio
Vista, and it rolls to the sea with
increasing grandeur all the wav.
Where it hews its way through the
Cascades, a new and gorgeous pic
ture is painted every moment, as
the mountains are passed, itsweeps
in perfect purity and with immense
volume to the sea. It is watched
by the most magnificent mountains
in the union, and where the rivers
join at the ocean there is an ever
lasting war of waters, which is as
beautiful as it is terrible. By the
by, when communication with
Oregon is cheap and comfortable,
people will cease to go to Europe
in the summers, but will seek the
Cascades of the Columbia and the
health giving Clatsop plains, and
will grow to be better Americans,
as they more fully realize the claims
which their native land has upon
their admiration. The Mississippi
has greater volume than the Co-
lumbia; the, Hudson makes rival
pictures which are as fine as any
painted in the Cascades; but there
is a power of beauty, and purity,
and a wildness about the river of
the west which is all its own, and
which is altogether unapproachable
in its charms.
