Several recent merca.itile failur s
in Europe are reported, aggregating j
liabilities to a very large amount.
The restoration of Major G. 0.
Haller, of Washington territory, to
filus rank in the armv from which he
,. . , ,, ........ i
was summarily dismissed uurwseu :
years ago, is an evidence of tardiness
of justice in this counhy. Either ho
should have received a trial or have
been restored to his rights long before
this time.
The Coast Mail, published at
Marshfield says: The schooner Arago,
now loading with lumber at North
3$end, was the first vessel built in
Coos bay. She ;s twenty-two years
old, ai'd is sliU doing good S2rvice.
She furnishes an illustration of the
., .-u a ,ii,;i;(,r r
superior strength and durability of
our Coos bay timber for ship building
purposes. Within the time that she
has been afloat, many an eastern
built vessel, in the construction of
which nothing but the best oak was
used, has rotted and been condemned,
or, becoming incapable of withstand
ing the eleiients, has gone to the bot
tom. Oregon rnd Washington will
yet furnish the ship yards for the
union.

The Bee of the 20th says: "Mr.
John Burk left for Astoria th'"s room
ing for the purpose of petting the As
toria Oil "Works in working order for
the season. Mr. W. S. Chapman is
associated with Mr. Burk in the enter
prise, which promises good returns.
The works will be in full blast some
time this week."
The Oregon ian says the best epi
tome of the ideas of those who support
Slater's bill to prohibit the Clrnese in
this country from earn:ng a Tving is
set forth byVicTrevitt of The Dal
les, in his usual epigrammatic styie:
'The3T curse the Indian," he remarks,
'because he won't work for a living,
and the Chinaman because he will."
The divnie injunction was, "in the
sweat of thy face, thou shalt eat bread."
But Senator Slater would reverse or
abolish this, as to the Chinese popu
lation. The Eart Portland Call s?ys parties
along the river on both sides are pre
paring for the annual rise in the Co
lumbia, the wate. having come up
three feet during the week, and is
fttill rising. There have been heavy
rains east of the Cascades for ten days,
which aid in swelling the volume of
water from the melting snows. It is
thought by old residents that we will
have extraordinary righ water this
easn and every precaution should be
taken by property-holders, as "water
will find its level."
Mv babv-hov sat on the floor.

For be had never seen before
That babv in the mirror door
What kept the two, so near, asunder ?
He leaned toward thai golden head,
The mirror border framed within,
lTntil two cheeks, like roses red,
Lav side by side, then softly said
