When Will Congress Acjourn.
On the 21st of hist month 1,400 bills
were introduced in the lower house of
congress. They were referred to vari
ous committees. Such a day's work
was never done in the National legis
lature before. Not only va3 the
number of bills enormous, but the
titles thereof, showed an amount of
misdirected ingenuitj7 in attempting
what is either silly, vicious or impos
sible, which should not exist outside
of a lunatic asylum. The measures
which are thus characterized did not
origin ate with any particular parry.
Some were by democrats, some by
republicans and others of the worst by
the greenbackers. Some of them in
volve such large interests that they
promise to bring on a long session and
general legislation. Measures affect
ing railways either favorably or un
fa vorably; for distributing the Geneva
award fund; for revising the tariff and
internal revenue laws these m:iy get
under such headway that an early ad
journment will be impossible.
A Just Compliment.
The Oregon City Enterprise of
last week pays the following' merit
ed tribute to our whilom associate
on the Democrat, Hon. C. B. Bel
linger, who now wears the ermine
in the fourth judicial district:
We have attended court regu
larly during the present term, and
feel greatly pleased in adding our
humble quota of admiration to the
many encomiums that have already
been passed upon the eminent
gentleman who fills the onerous po
sition of judge of this court. His
charge to the jury, at all times de
livered in the most admirable man
ner, one that cannot fail to draw
the closest and most interesting at
tention; calm, clear, and in langu
age that the most unfamiliar with
legal phrases and expressions can
not misconstrue a single sentence.
Our readers will remember his
masterly charge to the jury in that
import case of Johnson and Brown ;
it was one that carried conviction
to every mind that road it, and bore
the unmistakable evidence of a
"air and impartial judgment, a
lorough familiarity with the law,
and possessing the power of de
fining to the jury the most obtuse
theories. Since his elevation to
the bench Judge Bellinger has
been confronted with some of the
heaviest calendars on record, and
so far his opinions and decisions
have met with an undivided
approval from all classes of the
community. During the present
term of court the honorable gentle
man has endeared himself both in
and out of court to many who
hitherto only knew him by an ir
reproachable reputation. Though
politically opposed to the learned
judge, we extend to him our kind
wishes for his future welfare, be
lieving that at all times sterling
worth, independent of creed or fac
tion, is deserving of a fair and just
appreciation.
We doubt if there is an honest
man in the country who will say that,
in .his opinion, the cause of religion
has been advanced by the Talmage
trial. The scenes enacted in court
have unavoidedly impaired that re
spect which is verygen orally felt for
the reverend clergy. The littleness
of ordinary human nature, unaided by
divine grace, has been painfully ap
perent. If Brooklyn must have such
performances, it would be better to
close the door gently and shut them
out from public view. It is in the in
terest of religion, morality and good
government, that all the frailties, weak
nesses and f dlies of groat exemplars
of godliness shall not be held up con
tinually before the public gaze, as if
they were the prominent and peculiar
traits of those men. Such a process
makes even saints appear exceedingly
sinful.

reading in our paper from time to
time articles in regard to the labors
of a party which has been trap
ping up in the Cascades during
the past season, and it will proba
bly interest them to know with
what success the party has met. !
The pelts were brought down from i
the mountain last Moiulnv, and a i
more beautiful lot we have never
seen. Nineteen varieties of furs
were represented, and. following!

Before the pelts arrived here the
fur dealers had heard of them, and
five different men Avere here t:
bid for their purchase San Fran
cisco, Salem and this city beinir
represented. On Tuesday after
noon the furs were examined and
sealed bids were made, and Mr.
N. Solomon, of Portland, having
bid the highest took the whole lot
at 1,015. The trapping party
consists of Mr. Ilensley, well
known to persons who have trav
eled the Lebanon mountain road.
Al. Swartz, formely of Junction,
and Chas. Willert, of this city.
Their line of traps through the
past winter has extended entirely
over the Cascades and reached
down on Cache creek and the
Mitalus, and through the coldest
weather they have tramped it along
these lines, baiting their traps and
carrying in their pelts. In a few
weeks they expect to go up the
Columbia to see what prospect
there is up there for trapping, and
if they find the indications good
they will pass the next season in
that country. A more hardy set
of fellows than these three men we
have never seen. It takes the
true grit to enable a man to do
the -work they have during the past
winter. -"
"Will Tako an Appeal.
The Call says Capt. Carroll intends
to appeal from the findings already
announced in his case. Basing his
reasons for such appeal on the grounds
that if he erred at all it was in not
displacing the pilot and assuming com
mand of the ship when, in his opinion,
she had approached too near Sand
island. He does not claim to be
thoroughly familiar, however, with
the tides of the Columbia river, and
deferred to the judgment of the pilot,
who was supposed to be perfect! con
versant with the tides and currents, as
well as the sands and shoals of the
river. The Call surprises us very
greatly by saying that "Captain Car
roll speaks in anything but compli
mentary terms of the Webfooted deni
zens of the locality near where the
Great Republic was lost In fact their
wrecking proclivities appear to have
led them to perform acts which are
supposed to pertain only to a people
upon whom the light of civilization
has never shed its redeeming light."
We think this expression should not
be made by Capt. Carroll, nor any
body else, with some cpialifying re
mark. When Mr. Christiancy was asked
what foreign mission he would accept
in consideration of his seat in the sen
ate for Zach Chandler, he made
answer that he was yearning for rest,
and must have a place where peace
and quietness reigned perennially,
therefore he would go to Peru. Ar
riving at iiis carefully selected haven
of rest, the shattered statesman finds
grim visaged war waging wild deso
lution and creating fearful commotion.
It is a sad disappointment to the in
valid Solon. We will not be surprised
if he comes hack.
The first annual meeting of the
California press association will be
held in San Francisco July lGth.
Arrangements are now in progress by
the executive committee of the asso
ciation to render the occasion a
memorable one in the history of the
press of. the Pacific coast. Among
other features of the programme
will be a special entertainment at
one of the leading theaters of the
city, X banquet at the Palucs
hotel, and an address by a distinguish
ed ex-member of the press.
S-lt is funny that when yon ask a
man to advertise he generally declines
with the statement that nobody will sec
it. But if you advertise some, little caper
of his in the news column gratis, he gels
indignant over the certainty that every
one will see it.
