An Improved Steamer-

nia is a propeller of 2200 tons meas
urement, 307 feet lonj, 37 feet beam, i
20 feel depth of hold, and her en
gines are 2000 indicated hrs power.
She has a capacity for 200 first class
passengers, and large accommodations
in the steerage. The main saloon oc
cupies the entire width of the ship,
and is magnificently littted up and
furnished in walnut, curled maple and
;ish. The staterooms are heated with
steam, and the berths are so arranged
as to fold lit), similar to those of a
t sleeping car, when not in use. Elec-

ard's room, and they are provided with
every convenience known. An elec
tric light is lixed at the bow of the
vessel, and, by means of a reflector,
throws a ray of light two miles. Six
electric lights are also provided to
illuminate the engine room and the
main saloon. Owr the entrance to
the saloon is a protrait of Miss Min
nie Leckhard, a young lady of Phila
delphia who was present at the launch
ing, and christened the ship.
The State of California is supplied
with all the modern improvements,
among the most noticeable of which is
a machine for reversing the main en
gine. Bj' moving a handle a distance
of four inches, the engineer can, by
in exertion equal to lifting about five
engine, causing them to stop and re
verse almost instantly. The utility of
this appliance, especially in case of
accident, will be obvious. Many at
tempts have been made to steer steam
ships by steam, but in most cases,
with only partial success. On this
vessel the steering engine is tint of
sight of the man at the wheel, and, so
faras he is concerned, he makes use of
the ordinary wheel. The helm is put
to port or starboard as usual; but, in
stead of acting directly upon the rud
der, it moves the steam valves of a
pair of small directing engines, thus
setting them m motion, which is trans
'mitted through gearing to the rudder.
The valve gear of these steering
engines is so constructed that it will
permit the engines to move the rudder
i1 distance only corresponding to that
which the helmsman moves the wheel.
In heavy weather, instead of requiring
three or four men to steer the ship,
