Tuesday was one of those drizzly
fret days "which has a tendency to
keep everybody in-doors, and as a
consequence our visit m Portland was
cut short off. and on Wednesday morn
ing we took tlie train for Albany,
which place we reached about noon.
Here we found there had been a few
harloyon days, sunshine and warmth,
and genial growth through the valley,
Knd then protracted rains again. After
registering at the St. Charles we
Bought Mayor Thomas Monteith, and
visited points of interest about the
city, dven Geo. Simpson whom we
chanced to meet, interested "s muchly.
The sun was shining beautifully when
we spoke to George, but before our
hand shaking was over it was raining
again, and as to a reply to our saluta
tion of "beautiful day," the rains de
scended, and he said:- "That is good
Ireland, that's a confession that you
must have awful weather at Astoria
if you call this a beautiful day!" We
subsided of course, but we "owe him
one." Albany is improved very much
Bince otir last visit, and the Odd
Feilows with whom we met on Wed
nesday evening have added vastly to
the appearance of the business portions
of the city by erecting a magnificent
brick three stories in height, which is
to be dedicated during the coming ses
sion of the Grand Lodge this month.
On Sundav the 18th the holy bond

or the Jewish church, and Hebrews
and Christians will jneet together to
fitness it. The officiating officer will
be the Jewish Rabbi of Portland, Mr.
May, and the bride a lovely daughter
of Past Grand Johnson, of Albany.
Members of the fraternity may dis
cover in this some resttlt of the lect
tires of our Past Grand officer. It is
certainly an incident in Odd Fellow
ship without a precedent in the
history of the order, and stimulates
the hopes -tf hich animates the breast
of every true Odd Fellow, that the
blessed order may yet fraternize the
-World. There are many things, rail
toad and otherwise, jotted down in
memoranda for future comment con
cerning Albany our faithful Sister
city in the valley.
At 2 o'clock on Thursday we were
seated in the smoking car of ex-Mayor
Stroud's train, botind farther south.
The fields as we whirled past and
through them on either side presented
a somewhat yellowish and jaundice
appearance in consequence of the pro
longed cold storms. It is very evident
that the country does not need the
present manifestations of Jupiter
Pluvins, as all nature and human
kind look with disgust at "the weath
er." There are actually acres and
acres of wheat that have been actually
"drowned out," and hundreds of far
mers who have not yet finished seed
ing. "Verily this is an unusual spring
what vill the summer be? Last
year, on the 30th of March, the read
ers of The Aptorian will remember,
we were exhibiting to their admiring
gaze wheat twelve inches, and barley
fourteen inches in height at The
Dalles: how it is in Wasco this year
we are unable to say. In spite of all,
the people assure us that there will be
an abundant crop, and a good one.
"We fully realize that the growing crops
of California can only be saved by
abundant moisture, and if these wheat
fields can swim to perfection, then
verily Oregon is the best spot on
earth. We should like very much to
see some of these fields two months
hence.
The Oregon and California railroad
is in perfect condition, and ready for
business, long hoped for. We never
pass over this route from the summit
beyond the Calapooia,down Pass Creek
t-anyon, and up the Yoncolla but wo
are reminded of the almost superhn-

voters. The telegraph to-day informs
us of the adoption of the new state
constitution in California. A fellow
passenger, a very intelligent citizen
of San Francisco tells us that
if this be the fact, Oregon will
profit from California disaster. The
new constitution will prohibit people
from making numerous private con
tracts; it imposes a double tax (in
some instances treble), on the property
of corporations and tlUs stocks which
such propert represents; the supreme
courts system inaugurated by it is said
to be dangerous; it prohibits aid to
the orphans, the widows and the dis
tressed through charitable and agricul
tural institutions; is communistic and
revolutionary; and while it will not
benefit the poor wfrTwork injustice to
the wealthy. Some attempt to equal
ize taxation might be desireable in our
own beautiful, lovely, Oregon, but
God forbid that such an utter failure
as far as attaining the object desired
i3 concerned should be re-enacted in
this state. The railroad commission
provided for in the California consti
tution is a bad feature, a dangerous
and not easily remedied experiment.
As to the cause of this disaster to
California: They will be found to
exist in the very principles- suggested
by The Astorian so frequently; the
afatsc of the elective franchise. Let
the polls be faithfully guardedr and
lee every man be disfranchised forever
who may be tainted1 with even the sus-
Picion of interfering with the fullest
exercisc of freedom of the ballot, rich
or poor, white or black, apply the rule
to all alike.
RosebHTg, like Portland and Albany,
has greatly improved since our last
visit. Marks & Co., (Asher) have
put up a magnificent new store, brick.
The Metropolitan is our stopping
place, as of yore, 0. C. Perkins and
E. C. Headrick proprietors. Is is one
of the best kept, and is the mos$ pop
ular house in the city. In fact ?t was
so overrun with patronage that we
were provided with sleeping accom
modations at the house of a private
citizen, Mr. D. C. Maclellan, and we
retired to rest at an early hour, sleep
ing soundly and undisturbed until
8 o'clock this morning, when we arose,
and drawing the curtains took a look
out upon the smiling face of nature,
which Was so calm, so serene, so joyous
as to inspire us with the thoughts of
"Corrina's Going A-Maying," by
Robert Herreck, of the-penod between
1591 and 1G74, lately reproduced in
Chamber's Cyclopedia;

One could scarcely believe that the
days previous to this had been so
melancoly. Our movements from this
rest upon circumstances, but of things
rest assured dear readers, yon will
hear from us soon again from some
point in the valley. d. c. i.
The high credit of the English
government, both at home and abroad,
seems to have imbued the English
people with a blind confidence in the
bonds of other nations. It is stated
that many English families invested
all their means in Turkish and Egyp
tian bonds, and are reduced to dis
tress by the failure of these govern
ments to pay interest. The three
English colonies of Australia, Tas
mania, and New Zealand, owe a debt
of 355,000,000, nearly all of which is
held in England. These colonies
have great natural resources, bnt
