weather permitted, to locate an exten
sion of their route from Tenino to some
point on the Chehalis river. As soon as
this extension is completed, they will
put on a light draught steamboat and
thus have through connection from
Chehalis point to Olympia, a distance of

Massachusetts Widows Marrying
Tramps.
Sprinqfield Republican.
"Within a few months and in a
a raaius oi nine nines irom
here 1 can call to mind three
or four widows, comfortably well
off, who have married chaps that
came tramping along. A while
ago you noticed the case of a South
wick woman who committed this
folly, and whose husband is now in
jail for abusing
and threatening
the lives of his
wife and mother
favorite form of
in-law. His
amusement was to place the "wo
man folks" in chairs side by side,
and after poking a loaded gun in
their faces, to fire it off at a target
just above their heads. Five weeks
ajro a respectable and well con
nected woman of this town, whose
husband died less than two years
ajro, leaving: her a nice little home
and some '2,000 in cash, "got
struck" on a tramp who came to
her door, and though twenty years
his senior she married him. Since
then her home has been a rendez
vous for about all the tramps who
come along, and apparently the
good news is being widely spread
among the fraternity. A few days
ago the woman appeared with a
badly bruised face and damaged
eyes, and her friends had her hus
band arrested for assault. The
trial was a most ludicrous affair,
for the wifeadmitted that "Johnnie"
not only was the cause of her
present disfigurement, but had
soundly thrashed her at least twice
a week during their brief honey
moon, she. declared that she loved
him dearly and that he only whip
ped her when he was mad, because
she would't at first asking nve
him money or buy him a horse and
carriage. The man said that he
didn't think that he had thrashed
her above once a week, and, that
he, too, loved her dearly. Upon
this followed a very romantic scene,
the woman rushing into his arms
and mingling her tears and kisses
with his ditto, and both fairly fell
on their knees before Judge Lewis
to bejr his mcrcv. Judge Lewis
told them: "I want no such non
sense here," and fined the man
5 85, which the woman paid, and
a few minutes later they were
seen lovingly riding towards their
peaceful home.
Deplorable Condition of Russia.
Sew York Sun.
No country in all civilization
seems to be in so pitable a plight
at present as Russia. In addition
to her immense foreign debt and
her general financial derangement,
her political afilictions continually
cropping out in defiance of law,
and mysterious assassination, and
j her losses of every kind from the
late war, she is threatened with
famine. Last year she suffered
exceedingly from drought; nearly
one-third of her crops was des
troyed by beetles and marmots, so
that the seed has been deficient
and field labor is inadequate in
consequence of the excess of holi
days about one hundred a year
and the widespread drunkenness
of commom people, involving great
wastefulness. Grain, which is the
chief article of export, which fur
nishes the means of paying taxes
and of getting all supplies, now
seems insufficient to home con
sumption. Her domestic debt is
very oppressive. Most of the land
of the empire is mortgaged to
bankers, and its owners are scarcely
able to pay their interest, much
less the principal, their arrears be
ing from 25 to 30 per cent. Rus
sia is a vast country of vast re
sources, but she has drawn on
thiin very heavily of late, and all
indications are that she is ap
proaching a crisis in her fortunes
which will require the fullest wis
dom of her statesmen to meet.
She appears to be socially, politi
cally, financially and morally dis
organized, or very near it, and she
cannot go on much longer in her
present condition. No wonder
her most thoughtful minds are pes
simists. Many farmers around tjie country
who have been hoarding up their stock
of potatoes, are now selling them for a
lower price than they might have real
ized in the winter. To be fully satisfied
with what is enough, is always a safe
rule of action.

Compliment to American
School-ma'ms-
The London correspondent of
the Chicago journal writes: Cu
riouspy enough the female- school
teachers of the United States were
a subject of discussion in the
house of commons one night last
week. Mr. Mundella had referred
favorable to them, -when Mr. Mills
indulged in a sneer and doubted
that the custom "was one that could
be profitably followed in this
country. Then up rose Mr. Plunk
ett, a gattant Irishman,, who said
he had been in the United States
and there studied the subject, and
expressed the opinion that "it
would be a grand benefit to this
conntry if we could import 200 or
300 of those Amerioau women
teachers." Mr. Maclaren, also
quoted the bishop of Manchester,
who has declared, also from per
sonal experience, that their teach
ing is generally "much better than
that given in this country." Your
lady teachers were thus eloquently
and successfully defended, but it
was surelv an odd subiect for dis
cussion in the British house of
commons.
