The German Stock of Silver-
One of the unsolved problems of the
silver question is the amount, of that
metal Germany has on hand to throw
upon the market when the price of
silver rises to the point she has de
cided to sell at. It appears from an
analysis of the London tables of ex
ports and imports of silver, that the
tide has turned, and that Germany is
no? buying silver of England. In
$877 the net imports of silver from
Germany were $GS,414.G90. The next
year the net imports were only $12,
627,630, and in the Gist quarter of the
present year Germany cfrew from
England a net amount of 2,661,203.
A comparison of corresponding periods
shows that the change is not due to
the season. The German government
sold silver when there was a tempo
rary recovery in prices, but' did not
even supply the contiguous empire of
Austria, which drew largely from
London. As a stock of idle silver is
non-productive while interest is paid
ir the money with which- it was pur
chased, the German stock must be re
duced pretty low or a material appre
ciation of price Itfe anticipated. There
is very little doubt that silver bullion
will appreciate when it is known that
the German stock is nearly or quite
exhausted.
Dr. Potter made a good- suggest
ion at the tenement house meeting in
New York, recently. It was that
tenement houses should be built, not
on lots of twent3T-five feet by one
hundred, but on lots one hundred -
feet, or, better still, two hundred feet
square. These large structures, he
thought, could bo built by joint stock
companies, in which some of the ten
ants might themselves become invest
ors, and thus have an interest in the
protection and' care of the buildings.
The great demoralizing agency in the
present system is the want of air and
light. The foulnes3 of the atmosphere
caused by the crowding together of a
large number of human, beings in a
small space, the lack of ventilation
bad sewerage and absence of cleanli
ness imperils public health, risks a
pestilence, degrades- those who live
within its influence and kilta off
children with frightful rapidity No
sufficient-light or ventilation can be
secured ftv a- l'arge building with
twety-five feet frontage and its sides
enclosed by other structures.

boats; Gadfly, 1 and Gripperl, double
screw iron gunboats; Insolent, 1,
double screw steel gunboat; Nautilus,
8, and Pilot, 8, sailing brigs; Tickler,
1, double screw iron gnnboat, all at
Pembroke. The Kingfisher, G, com
posite screw sloop, at Slieerness, the
Linnet, composite gun vessel, and the
Swift, double screw gun vessel, at the
Thames Ship-building company. The
Miranda, G. and the Phnmix, G, com
posite screw sloops, at Davenport.
Another ship the Pmcher, 1, double
screw iron gunboat, is to be built at
Pembroke.

Miss Henrietta Spencer, aged 38,
born in Garland, Me., died in south'
Boston April 14th, after a short ill
ness, of pneumonia and typhoid fever.
She had been blind 28 years. She
was educated at the institution for
the blind at south Boston, where for
the past ten years she has supported
herself by running a sewing machine
in the workshop connected with the
institution. Working by the piece, as
she did, it often became difficult to
obtain more- than the bare necessities
of life. She wa3 an expert in bead
and worsted work, which she did when
her hands were not otherwise em
ployed. She had remarkable courage,
a very pleasant disposition, and had
many friends, who look upon their
loss as her ga n. She leaves no rela
tives, her parents having been dead
twenty years. The cause of her blind
ness was the bursting of a percussion
cap by a playmate, pieces of the cap
entering her eves.
