An observatory is being erected on
toD of the Parker House hotel which
will add much to the appearance of the
house and also present to the. guests a
fine view of the city,and also as far as the
eye can reach seaward, and. up the
river.
A land pile-driver is being built on
the roadway, near the Cregon Steam
Navigation Company's wharf, to be used
in driving piles for the construction of
a new building for Mayor Y. V. Parker
on the corner diagonally across from the
cosmopolitan hotel.
Pat O'Brien, one of the deck-hands
on the steamer R. R. Thompson while
coming from the wharf at The Dalles to
the steamer missed his footing and fell
overboard. A line was soon passed to
h'ui. but he seemed insensible and fail
ed to notice It, sinking immediately and
"was not again seen.

The new residence now being built
bv Mr. i. F. Denham of Salem, for Mrs.
E'liz:. Kinney ol that place, on Fourth
strec in this city, is progressing finely.
The residence, when completed will he
occipied by Dr. Aug. C. Kinuey. The
fount ation and brick work is being
made entirely of Clatsop county brick,
and from the tests which have been
'made, it is aid that these brick are fully
enroll to any other brick manufactured
in tlu state! A fireplace will be erected
in the building by Mr. James Stewart
of this citv. which will be made from
sand-stone from the quarry on the op
posite, side of the river. This stone is
a most excellent article for a good fireplace,
Chamber or Commerce.
