55m, Howlish Wampoo, Mose3 and
other Indians, are coining home, per
chance to fiht. They are in charge
of JIujor Gornoyer, Mr. Cornoyer
stated the chiefs were well satisfied
with the result of their visit to
Washington. Moses had got a tract
of lauid or reservation set aside for
him and liis people, and for all those
Tribes who wish to join him. The res
ervation is located on the Columbia
river. Twelve tribes will locate on
this reservation. The Walla Wallas,
(Jmatillas and Cay uses will select their
lands in severalty, each member of
the tribes being entitled to 1G0 acres.
iSome of the chiefs who visited Wash
ington wished to visit Chief Joseph of
the Nez Perees, now in the Indian
territory, but this wish was not grant
ed them, the trip being regarded too
long, expensive and impolitic.
There is no longer any doubt that
the president intends to veto the army
appropriation bill. The veto message
will be sent to congress to-day. In
view of this announcement, and of the
certainty that the pending legislative
appropriation bill will also be vetoed,
there is much consultation already in
progress among the most promiueni
democrats :is to the proper course
for the majority to pursue when
the dead lock actually occurs. Qt
course the matter will not be decided
without great difficulty, for there
are many conflicting views and a
large proportion of the democrats m
congress continue to condemn all pro
positions of compromise, Lut several
of the coolest democratic leaders, have
recently privately expressed them
selves in favor of the passage of a joint
Resolution, extending last years ap
propriatiorifclintil December, and of
prompt adjfjlrnmeut. Thispian would
readily obtain a majority vote in both
houses by the union of republicans
with hard money democrats, who
wish an early adjournment to prevent
further widening of the breach between
--eastern and western wines of the!
party, which is likely to result from
continued tinkering with finances, but
oft money men have a majority of
the votes in the democratic caucus,
and the adoption of this expedient for
escape from the dead lock is therefore
till verv uncertain.

Stubborn Justice-
A little trouble took place on
Sunday week last at the Spokane,
between the whites and Indians.
The Indians claimed the land
which a man named Grant had
settled on, and ordered him off,
Grant refused to go, and swore out
a warrant .-against the Indians.
One was arrested, and as they
were about to lock him up twenty
five mounted Indians rode in and
demanded his release, saying they
would take him from the sheriff by
force if he did not let him go
quietly. The justice stepped be
tween the prisoner and his friends
with a sl.oi gup, telling tl e:n
lo take him if they wanted him.
The Indians had a pow-wow and
decided that they did not care
about taking him. Monday noon
Chiefs Gary and Enoch came to
the justice and said that they were
very sorrr their men had caused
anv trouble, and that it should not
occur again.
A Mr. Stockwell in the Massa
chusetts legislature wants to memorial
ize congress for a law making ten
hours kbor a day's vo k. What
business has congress to say what
liall be a day's work in Massachusetts?
0 ingress could just as well fix the
price of molasses, or the size of beer
tumblers. Congress often enough
meddles with what don't belong to
them, without inviting such interfer
ence. Queen "Victoria's family, if her
children take after her, may be very
numerous before her death. The

A Wasp Nest in Stone.
Eureka f-Vrr.) Sentinel.
"While blasting rock from one of
the quarries on the hillside west of
town the attention of one of the
workmen was attracted to the cu
rious formation of 'one of the piec
es that had been split off. An ex
amination proved that imbedded
in the rock was a wasp's nest the
texture and cells of which although
turned to stone, were plainly visi
ble. On breaking open the cells
the larva and two perfectly formed
wasps were found in the same pet
rified condition as the nest. There
is no visible crack or outlet by
which the insects could have pene
trated the rock, and the pieces in
which this curious formation was
found was taken from a depth of
forty feet from the surface. The
rock is granitic sandstone of sedi
mentary origin. The specimens
were carefully cut out and forwar
ded to the Smithsonian institute at
Washington.
Every one ought to be busy, but no
one ought to be so busy that he can't
do his work well. An overworked
man is like a certain plough of which
we have heard, which turned up a
great deal more than it could turn
over.
