die glory of 'God was the chief end of
die Saybrook platform; the salvation
f thousands elect. The present
"pleasant discourse" is as to whether
ye ancient Puri tains did teach ye
damnation of inrants. Some assort
that such a notion was never heard of
till the foes of religion, in pure mal
ice, put it into the mouths of long
dead and defenseless divines. But it
is asserted on the other side that the
Colonial parsons and pools did teach
the said doctrine in unmistakable
rerms. Neither side will ranch facts
for some months yet. Meanwhile the
great religious daily begs leave to offer
the following quotations. From the
pages of Michael Wigglesworth, p:is
tor at Maiden, Mass., from 1G5G to
1704, we cull this gem:
TIumi the bar all drew 110:1 r
"Who died in infancy.
Ami newr had a good or bad

"Hut from the womb unto the tomb
Were straightway earned.
Or at the le:i.t ere they transgressed
Who thus began to plead.
Well, they pleaded that it would
hardly be the tqnare thing to burn
them eternally for Adam's s'ti, seeing
that Adam was in sight on one of the
best thrones, enjoying himself hugety.
But the Judge shut olf debate, moving
the previous question, as follews:
You sinners are. and such a .share
As sinners may expect.
Such you shall have, for I do save
None but my own elect.
Yet to compare your sin with their
Who lived a longer lime,
I do-confess vours is much les.
Though every sin's a crime.
A crime it is; therefore, in bliss
You may not hone to dwell;
But unto you I shad allow
The easiest room in hell.
The pious Michael, having disposed
of all classes and ages, cent them to
their .appointed places, thus gives them
a parting kick:
Gth m-tnway without delay;
Christ pities not your cry;
Depart to hell there may you yell
And roar eternally.
We can imagine the smack of the
lips, the satisfactory beam in his eye.
when Brother Wigglesworth has
cleared the board. There is no dodging
the cniiflsqneiices of sturdy truth in
his .language. He has almost the con
viction 1 hat he sees .the programme.
He'sees it in his spiritual eye, and it
is his duty to be wiP'ug to be in the
bad number, if thereby he can help
the cause.
We have no desire to enter into the
controversy; but as a momentary re
lief from ye great Catholic controversy
mid ye social evil reconsideration, we
' consider ye damnation of infants tem

At and near Smartsville, Yuba
county California, a colony is being
formed for the purpose of emigrating
to this country. Ths colony will con
sist of one hundred or more men with
families and an average of one thous
and dollars each. The colony woald
like to settle in a body as near as
maybe. To that end they want a
tract of land five miles square or a
strip one mile wide and twenty-five
miles long. The secretary has written
here for information. Our advice is
for the proposed colony t spend, say
five hundred dolhtrs, in sending a com
mittee of practical men here to ex
amine the country. In the mean
time any one wh knows n tract of
land fiuch as desroed by the colony will
confer a favor on it by communicat
ing with C. C. Bfflhaiu, corresponding
secretary, Smartsville, Yuba 0011x113"

mother's side, being a cousin of Lord
French, a Galway peer. Gonville
Bromhead's elder brother, Major
Bronihead, was with, the depot of his
regiment when Lord Chelmsford's dis
astrous dispatch arrived. He at once
applied to go to the war, and without
waiting for the drafts took the first
