Comments on tlic Disaster.
Il is true that the steamship Great
Republic attempted to come into the
Columbia river in the nijjht time. It
is also true that nearly every steam
ship that has crossed and re crossed
the bar many times for years past,
has done the same thins; and it is
equ&Ify true that so long as water
ruiis, and ships float, and commerce
increases, the act will be repeated,
over and over again, and may result
in future disasters. But this does not
excuse the press of the country for
saying harsh things of the command
ers. We consider that the commander,
and not the editors of newspapers in
distant parts of the land, is the com
petent judge of the fitness of the hour
when ships bhould enter port, and it
is reasonable to suppose in cases of the
kind which has brought this subject
before the public, that instead of
censuring the officers of the lost ship,
the press should take the matter
in hand and excoriate such of
those in high federal places as
revel in red tape and fail to
supply the necessnry aids to enable
commerce to proceed in its natural
way. It is unreasonable to expect
that the commander of a steamship
with 1,000 or more precious lives on
board, should lie out on the ocean in
sight of port on such an e cning as
that of last Friday, and make no effort
to get in, when there was not ;i breath
of air stirring, nor a ripple upon the
water, "which was as smooth as a
mill pond," Capt, Carroll tells us. t
would be considered cowardly on his
part. And Capt. Carroll has done
just what any commander should
have done under similar circumstances.
"But some one is to blame;" and
there's the rub. Who was it? if not
the aolons of this boasted nation, our
Great Republic, who permit commerce
to be taxed to the death, and grudg
ingly vote one dollar to foster the same
while they are wasting money by the
bushel in their villainous wrangles over
the dead bodies of recent political
parties which have caused almost as
fearful wreck of our National Republic
as they have caused of the once proud
steamer Great Republic br their gross
neglect. "Indict somebody, and let us
have a cause before the courts." But
you cannot indict the ones who are to
blame; and steamers must continue to
run, and take such chances, paying
out more for fuel and provisions every
round trip, to feed people, and stand
off and on, waiting for day-light, than
would operate sufficient light-houses a
whole year, lighting up the channel
and making it as plain to the ship
master by night as it is by day. We beg
our brethren of the press to consider
this phase of the subject. , Capt. Car
roll has endeavored to do his duty
faithfully let government officials do
as well.
Harbor of Refuge.
The strongest argument that can be
jnale in favor of the Columbia river
lies in the facts of the late disaster.
There is now so much business here
that it will be criminal to very much
longer neglect to furnish the necessary
aids asked for by masters, owners, and
all having anything like a clear con
ception of the case. There is not a
port nor entrance in the wide world
where so much shipping is transacted
as we have here, so neglected as this.
Every ship master with whom we have
conversed, upon this subject, without
a single exception, agree that the im
provement can be made, that it ought
U be made, and we ask that it shall
be made.
When Did tlio Tomato Arrive
Boston Transcript.
Noticing an nrticle in your paper
containing an account of the first eat
ing of the tomato in this country, I
desire to correct your correspondent

west of Fourth, Philadelphia. During
1708, a Frenchman named Nicaol
left San Domingo with his family, con
sisting of wife and two children, and
occupied .the adjoining property. He
brought with him several varieties of
vegetable seed, which he planted, and
after a lapse of time grew and bore
fruit. Among them was a tomato,
which he dressed as a salad, and which
w;is relished by Mr. Eldridge's family.
The neighbors procured the seed and
raised them as an ornament, having
the impression that they were poison
ous. Tomatoes were used in jSTev
Orleans as an article of food in 1S12;
they were sold in ririladelrriiia markets
as early as 1820.
