sts forth that Reese died on the

The captain of an English ves
sel lying in the dock at Dunkirk,
France, attempted to evade the
port regulation against kindling
fires on board, by having a char
coal fire made inhis cabin, which
would not give forth any smoke to
betray him. It gave forth gas
enough, however, to suffocate him,
and his life paid the penalty of his
petty effort at evasion.
Sportive David Davis.
Wadtington Corr. SL Louis Globe-Democrat.
Thrt senate onranized with its
usual regularity. The ponderous
Davis of Illinois alone disturbed
the funeral solemnity of the occa-

stituted major-domo. He stirred
about the hall, congratulating
everybody, without reference to
politics, and, for a 400-pounder,
was the most chipper senator on
the floor. His enthusiasm exceed
ed even the usages of the senate.
When Carpenter was called to take
the oath, instead of being escorted
by his colleague, Cameron of Wis
consin, the weighty Davis jumped
out of his five square feet of chair
bottom, waddled over toward Car
penter, and extending his arm, es
corted him to the desk. When
Logan's name was call, he property
escorted him to the desk, but when
Colliding" name was read, and the
mighty lllinoisan again waddled
across the hall and gathered the
New York senator into his arm0,
