She -was relieved on the 3d instant by the steamship Alaska, the Osprey Hailing the same evening for this station. All is quiet. A special correspondent of the Colonist on board of the Osprey epitomizes events as follows : With the exception of one night, the Indians have been quiet. The night I allude to was that of the 29th ult., when a boat from the Oliver Wolcott came alongside at about 9:30 o'clock, with a letter from Colonel Ball, the collector, to our captain, asking for some rock ets for signal purposes, and re questing that arms and men might land in case of a certain signal bain? shown from the custom house. ize captain accordingly had the rockets sent, and held our selves in readiness for landing, which, during the early part of the night, rather expected and all of us hoped for, I think. We learned the following day that the men of the Oliver Wol cott, which were tying off the In dian rancherie, were standing to their arms all nirht and had their guns loaded ready to open iire the moment the signal should be made which, however, was not shown, and the night passed without any disturbance. It appears, I learned from Col. Ball the following day, that a number of Chilcat Indians, had come from the north that evening or the evening before, so, of course, there was a drinking ca rousal, or potlach, as they call it, which turned into a row, during which, one of the Annahoot's kins men, was rather severely wounded with a knife or something, of the kind. Annahoot is a friendly Sitkan chief who prevented the first dis turbance from taking place, and probably the other tribes look on him as an enemy. In return for .this, one of Annahoot's party picked up a stone and smashed in a Ohilicats face, for which the Chili cats swore they would have Anna hoot's blood, and as Annahoot lives within the stockade, and close to the custom house and other places in habited by whites, it was thought likely that should the Chilcats cany out their threat they would in all probability have gone to further extremities, I mean that these Indians once having tasted blood, so to speak, would not have been satisfied with Annahoot's party alone, but would have come straight upoii the whites, Anna hoot being their friend. Collector Ball of Sitka makes an appeal for help from the general government. That if the Alaska leaves them they may all be mur dered. The situation is dangerous in the extreme. 3UscelI:incozis. The debates in the house simply fighting the battles the rebellion over. are of Failure follows failure in San Francisco, until they scarcely at tract more than a passing notice. The giant powder works, near Golden Gate park, which blew up a few wcks ago, was the scene of another explosion on the 10th. It is supposed that a spark of fire struck a washing tub between the mixing house and the washing house. The latter was demolished nnd the roof ef: the mixing house stove in. and the glass in houses in the vicinity smashed. Nobody Jinrt, and damages less than 1,000. The net profits divided by the e'ght partners in Bass & Co.'s brewery, at Burton-on-Trent, Eng land, last year amounted to $2, 100,000. Mrs. Hoyt, wife of the convicted Bridgeport fratricide, says that he wanted her to sit at his c-ile and pretend to weep, so as to effect the jury. A few drops of ammonia added to a gallon of water and applied once a week to all pots of flowers, will do much good and keep the pots and earth from souring. Potatoes cut ten days or two weeks before planting, and sprin kled with plaster, will sprout earlier and grow better than when cut and planted on the same day. The newspapers of Marlboro Mass., eU of a widow who, getting possession of the signature of the lale Thomas Cory, of that place, on an otherwise blank sheet of pa per, wrote a note for 5,000 above it and demanded payment of the executors. She gained her suit, but evidence of her crime was af terward discovered, and she has abandoned the case rather than risk a second trial. MISCELLANEOUS. . ATTEXTIO.
