The mast of a sunken vessel,
with all sails set, was discovered
off Pacific Mail dock Tuesday
morning at low tide. The vessel
proves to be the schooner Laura
M. Damon which, collided with a
vessel near Mission rock. The tide
rolled her over and she filled and
sunk. The crew escaped in a boat.
The British Columbia parlia

A case of great interest to
shipmasters was recently decided
at Liverpool. The lur Coinmo-
dore, of that port, agreed to tow
the American ship Robert Dixon,
recently on this coast, from Liver
pool past the Skerries. In fulfill
ing her contract, the ship un
avoidably got into a dangerous
position, on a lee shore. At this
point the hawser parted, and the
ship was compelled to let go both
anchors. The tug finally towed
the ship out of danger, but the
ship was compelled to slip both
cables. The tug libeled the ship for
500 salvage. The ship refused
to pay, and brought suit to recover
the value of the two chains and
anchors. The court in giving judg
ment for the ship, stated that when
a tug contracts to tow a vessel
from a specified place to another,
she can have no valid claim
against the ship for any services in
saving the vessel from disaster, as
long as the contract is uncomplet
ed. This case is of great imper
ii nice to tug owners, as well as;
shipowners and shipmasters, and
we regret that want of space
makes it impossible to publish the I
text of the decision 111 full.
When Asa Howard was clerk in
4ihe store of Enos Dean, at Taunton,
Mass., forty-six years ago, he sealed
and buried two quart-botties of
rum in the cellar. Air. Howard
for thirty years has been a resident
of California, and recently returned
on a visit and dug up the bottles,
after a lapse of forty-six years, and
found them and their contents in
a perfect state of preservation.
