Ex-Senator Mitchell intends
within the next few weeks to re
turn to Portland to resume the
practice of his profession.
A vigorous attempt during
the present congress will be made
to procure the passage of a bill to
throw open the Jndiau territor1
for settlement.
The storm of Monday was the
severest felt in Long Island
during the winter. Snow drifts
five feet hisrh made the Long
Island railroad impassable.
A series of desperate robber
ies are reported in Texas. The
robbers are believed to be the
notorious Reeves gang, from
Lincoln county, New Mexico.
Rangers will pursue them.
Promment colored residents
of St. Louis who have been active
in relieving colored emigrants
from the south have issued acircu
lar representing the desperate
condition of the sufferers and ask
ing aid from the general public to
supply them with the necessaries
of life and means of reaching their
destination, Kansas.
PacISic Coast Dispatches.
Articles of agreement between
the Sutro tunnel and the mining
companies were finally s'gned by
all contracting parties to-day.
This afternoon Mr. Sutro starts for
Virginia to besrin work.
On Wednesday, the laborers
employed by the contractor for the
North beach sea-wall, San Fran
cisco, to the number of about 200,
struck for an increase of wages.
The gang quit work and went to
Nob hill, where 150 were grading,
and forced them to quit work ha
stening them. A force of police
was sent to the scene and some ar
rests were made. The graders
mostly quit work. Onderdonk.
the contractor, refuses to accede to
the terms of the strikers, and has
advertised for hands.

The government has resolved
to discontinue precautions against
the plague in Russia.
A squadron of Hussars was
swept away by the current while
crossing the Cabul river near Jelal
labad on the 31st of March. One
lieutenant and 40 men are nvssing.
Sixteen bodies have been recovered.
A diamond in the rough re
sembles nothing so much as a peb
ble of rock salt. When found it
is usually an egg-shaped or pear
shaped stone, lustreless and white,
with no more pretensions to value
in its looks than thousands of peb
bles scattered along the seashore.
The fire and brilliancy of the gem
are developed by the lapidary at
great expenditure of time and
labor. For many years, centuries
even, tne neaa quarters ui uw
diamond-cutting trade has been
in Holland, and it is only within
this century that the workmen of
other countries have begun to
compete with the patfent, skillful
and careful Dutchman.
A little kerosene added to stove
polish improves the lustre. Apply
while the iron is warm.
Hints for House Cleaners.
Powdered borax, scattered in
their haunts, will disperse cock
roaches. Gum camphor wrapped in paper
and laid around sugar barrels will
disperse ants.
Paint, splashed upon window
glass, can easilv be removed by a
hot solution of soda.
To clean matting, wash with a
solution of one pint of salt to four
gallons of water, and wipe dry im-
mediatelv.

Use kerosene and brick-bath of
lime, to scour zinc, tin, or copper;
wash in hot suds, and polish with
dry whiting.
A little spirits of turpentine
added to the water with which
iloors are washed, will prevent the
ravages of moths.
To remove spots from furniture
take four ounces of vinegar, two
of sweet oil, and one of turpentine;
mix and apply with a flannel cloth.
Spirits of ammonia, diluted with
water, if applied with a sponge or
flannel cloth to discolored spots in
carpets or garments, will often re
store the color.
Soot falling on the carpet from
open chimneys, or from carelessly
handled stove pipes, if covered
thickly with salt, can be brushed
up without damage to the carpet.
To clean oilcloths, wash always
with warm milk. Once in six
months scrub with hot soap-suds,
dry thoroughly, and apply a coat
of varnish. They will last as long
again.
"When carpets are well cleaned,
sprinkle with salt and fold when
laid, strew with slightly moistened
bran before sweeping; this, with
the salt, will freshen them wonder
fully. Fullers earth, mixed to a stiff
paste with cold water, spread on
the carpet, and covered with brown
paper, will, in a day or two, re
move grease spots; second appli
cation may be necessary.
A paste made of whiting and
benzine will clean marble, and
one made of whiting an chlor
ide of soda, spread and left to
dry (in the sun if possible,) on the
marble, will remove spots.
A flannel cloth dipped in
warm soapsuds, then into whiting,
and applied to paint, will instantly
remove all grease and dirt. Wash
with clean water, then dry; the
most delicate paint will not be in
jured, and will look like new.
Plaster of paris mixed with gum
arabic water makes an excellent
white cement, but must be used
immediately, as it hardens quickly.
A mixtre of five parts gelatine to
one of acid chromate of lime, ap
plied to broken edges, which
should be pressed together and ex
posed to the sunlight, makes an in
soluble cement.
To whiten walls, scrape off all
old whitewah and wash the walls
with a solution of two ounces of
white vitriol to four gallons of
water. S.oak a quarter of a pound
of white glue in water for twelve
hours ; drain and place in a tin
pail, cover with fresh water, and
set the pail in a kettle of boiliii"
water. When melted, stir into the
glue eight pounds of whiting and
water enough to make a mixture as
thick as common whitewash. Ap
ply evenly with a good brush ; if
the walls are very yellew, blue the
water slightly by squeezing in it
a flannel bag containing some pow
dered blue.
It is supposed that there is
now 3,000,000 in trade dollars in
the Atlantic states, and all the un
chopped trade dollars in China will
undoubtedly turn up at New York.
Efforts have been frequently made
to legalize the coin, and it is under
stood that they will be renewed.
Whether successful or not, the
coin is likely to be circulated side
by side with the standard dollar in
domestic exchanges.
