I learned a secret since I have lived
in London. It is one that concerns
men. Women have long been anxious
to know wh-t it could have been that
preserved the health and beauty of
Ninon de 'lEnclos to such a period
that men young enough to be her
grandsons were in love with her.
Books have been written on the sub
ject, some attributing the wonder
ful preservation of her be-uly
to a daily bath of ashes' milk,
and others to a similar immersion in
tepid water. The mystery is one I
have never penetrated; but the secret
I am about to impart relates to. the
wonderful preservation of their facul
ties and good looks by men about
town in London.. You hear old swells
of seventy and upwards dining out
every niwht, being seen at dancing par
ties often wriJing books or making ' hem
selves otherwise promment. How o
they do it? Why, simply by pracf '"sirg
Stephen Massett's plan of toL-l absti
nence, or nearly that They have
found by long experience that men
who drink to any extent cannot keep
well, and as for smoking, it is exceed
ingly injurious to some constitutions,
I see old beaux here at dinner men
who, if I thought about the subject at
all in connection with them, I supposed
werj two-bottled men or more who
quietly turn their first gs of sherry
into a tumblerful of water and dan'cj
that, and that only, to the exclusion !
of claret, burgundy, champagne and
liquors, the whole dinner through.
Oh, they toast you finely, and drink
with a will to the health of the Queen
and the royal family only observe,
they don't drhil:. They let the young
fools do that. They have cut their
wisdom teeth.
Pay-director Cunningham, one of
the most genial of American naval of
ficers, was in London recently, though
he is back in Washington ere this.
Mr. Cunningham spent so much time
in San Francisco that I have no doubt
news of him will be of interert to
many of your readers. He is full of
life and gaiety, and had plenty of nice
invitations herein the whole time he
remained. His jidus Achate in Eng
land was Mr. James Ashbury, M. P.,
one of tbe richest young men in the
kingdom, and very princely in his
ways. Mr. Ashbury has two splendid
residences, one here and one in Brigh
ton, both superbly furnished, snd
each fitted out with a perfect staff ol
servants. This is rather rare for a
bachelor. Mr. Ashbury entorfc. irod
Cunningham at Brighton, and thn
placed his elegant town house at
liis disposal, though he was not to
be 5n itself, but Mr. Cunmngham pre
ferred to stop at Morley's. Mr. Asl
bury's parting gift to Mr. Cunning
haai was a curious one. In appear
ance it was nothing more than a stone
about the size of one's thumbnail, c;r
cular below, flat on one side, some
thing like a cornelian in color, with a
doe'ded speck of white about the size
of a pin's head in the centre. What
was it? Simply a petr'led human
eye. Very rare, and worth a great
deal or money to a connoisseur in
cuch curiosities. With its fellow, it
was taken from the sockets of the
head of a Peruvian mummy, where
some peouliar condition of the eye, or
some unusual agent used in embalm
ing, had petrified these watery globes.
Mr. Ashbury wears his mounted sis a
scarf-pin, but Mr. Cunningham sjys
he thinks he'll place his along with
some other curiosities he has got,
for he don't altogether fancy ic
as a personal ornament. Women
in society are going fairly mad
over Mrs. Rutherford Clay's living
beetle, which she has harnessed up
with gold chains and wears as an
ornament. She got this thing in
Mexico six months ago, and it has
never eaten since it hrs been in her
possession. I should loth it mycelf,
but I hear ladies constantly asking
where the scarabea aan be bought. 1
should think a necklace of live b-etlcs,
and a pair of ear rings and a finder
ring of petrified human eyes, wouIdTo

There are two periods in a wo
man's life when she does not like
to talk. When one is we nevcv
knew, and the other we have for
gotten. "The only joke women like to
read are those which reflect ridi
cule on men." "Yes " says an
exchange, "on taking up a paper
a woman invariably turns to the
mani.itrf column."
