Tn the house of commons Sir Stafford 23brthcote, chancellor of the exchequer, said that negotia tions with Afghanistan had not been completed and he was unable to communicate details. He had no information that an advance on Cabul had been ordered. A St. Petersburg special says: "Forty-five persons were arrested the night after the attempt on the life of Gcn.Von Dreutelin, chief of the gens d'armes. Some were of such high rank that they were not sent to the common prison. They include officers of the guard, court chamb erlains and two daughters of a prominent minister. Eastern States. Efforts are making east among the friends of Don Cameron to give him a prominent place among the " availables " in the presiden tial nice. Garfield expressed the opinion that the extra session of congress will last all summer. The army bill will be vetoed if it passes with the rider now pending in the house. A bill was introduced by Senator Grover on the 31st in re gard to .the Northern Pacific rail road, which provides that the time for completion of its main line shall be extended two years upon conditions substantially the same as the conditions of the Mitchell bill of last congress. An Omaha special says : The proposed excursion to San Fran cisco to meet General Grant is meeting hearty encouragement thfoughout the country. Estimates are being made, and it is believed that railroad transportation can be provided from Omaha to San Fran cisco and return for 23.
