Pacific Coa.si Dispatches.
Thursday- night fire was dis
covered in Jackson's theatre, San
"Bernandino. It was found that the
stage, side scenes, and a portion
of the main floor were sprinkled
over with coal oil. A pile of rags
Haturated with oil, was found, m
one of the dressing rooms and un
der the stage. The fire was ex
tinguished before any serious dam
age was done.
British Columbia feels that
she is being trifled with 03- the
Dominion government in the mat
ter of the Pacific railway. Seces
sion is freely talked of in conse
quence. The representatives of
British Columbia at Ottawa in
their appeal to the government in
sists on knowing immediately what
is to be done. They demand that
work shall be commenced in Brit

The district court at Seattle
has been occupied two whole days
with the famous Bell-town scan
dal case, in which a 3'oung married
woman named Lazeau, recently
parted from her husband, institutes
a suit against the wife of a promin
ncnt wealthy citizen named Har
kins, to recover five thousand
dollars damages for alleged slander.
No case ever tried in the territory
lias created such intense excite
ment, andthe court room is crowd
ed during the entire course of the
trial. Man)' leading families are
dragged into it, including the pas
tor and a prominent member of
the Methodist church. The testi
mony throughout is a perfect storm
of filth. The only recourse left
was to impeach the character of
plaintiff and a certain other young
lady who appeared as witness
against her, and drau them down to
the lowest depths of womanly deg
radation. The suit will demoral
ize, ruin and damn all concerned
in it. Durina: Judc Burke's ar
gument for the plaintiff Friday
evening, the mother of Mrs. L,va
eau was carried fainting from the
court room. The case went to
the jury at 7 o'clock, and in an
hour they returned with a verdict
for plaintiff, damages three cents.
The county must pay the costs,
amounting to between four and
five hundred dollars.
Eastern Siates.
In the Oliver-Cameron suit
on the 2Sth, the defense rested the
case and Mrs. Oliver was recalled.
She testified that she never slept
in a room with Mrs. Henriqucs;
had no conversation with her about
Cameron, and never told her, or
any other person, that she intended
to blackmail him.
The rival medical schools
have entered into a light over the
composition of the national board
of health. The president has
nominated live allopathic physi
cians and two homcepaths, and
in the senate the former were con
firmed, but the latter were ob
jected tc, and no action taken.
The New York Sun of the
28th, says: The cost of Congress
man Whiteakers hurried trip from
.Oregon to attend the opening of
congress including a special palace
car from San Francisco to Ogden
,is estimated from $1,500 to $i5500.
"Who is to pa the expenses of this
extraordinary trip has not been
stated, but is not Mr.'Whiteaker.
The secretary says it is no
discredit to the silver dollar that it
is not popular. Neither is gold
popular. The vaults of the sub
treasury in New York are filled
with gold that any body can have
in exchange for greenbacks by
simply asking, yet but few ask.
There is virtually no demand for
gold or silver. "We have some
six millions of subsidiar' silver
coin in the treasury, which we will
pay out when called for; yet there
is no demand, or next to none, for
that. The fact is, people have
become educated in a school of
paper money, and they "want
nothing else if they can get it, that
is at all times equal with gold.
