PEN AND SCISSORS.
A substitute for wood in the
manufactur of barrels, kegs, and
pails, and all articles coming under
the head of wooden-ware, has been
invented in the east, the substance
used being; straw or vegetable
pulp If all that is claimed for it
is true, this invention will revolu
tionize the wooden ware trade, as
in addition to superior strength
and beauty of finish all the articles
manufactured can be produced at
one-half the cost of those made of
wood.
Gen. llosser, chief engineer of
the Northern Pacific railroad, took
advantage of the thick ice on the
Missouri river to lay a railroad
track across, over which he trans
ported the heavy materials which
will be needed in the spring for
the hundred miles of new roadway
which the company has made ar
rangments to build during the
coming season. It was doubted
whether the ice would bear the
enormous loads, but the experi
ment was perfectly successful.
The first international exhib
tion ever held in Australia will be
opened at Sydney, New South
"Wales, in August. The enter
prise is to be carried out on quite
an extensive scale. The exhibi
tion building, when completed,
will cover seven and a half acres
of covered space, and will cost
about 100,000, 850,000 of which
lias already been voted by the gov
ernment.. The work of construc
tion has been commenced, the
number of men employed being
150, which is to be increased shortly
to 1,500, in order to complete the
structure in time. From present
indications it is believed that a
large patronage will be received,
and it is thought that. California
will be well represented.
A sood deal of nonsense has
appeared lately in many of the
eastern papers in regard to the
exportation of one or more cargoes
of wheat from eastern ports to
Barcelonia. It is claimed that
these were the first shipments
from the United States to Spain,
and some of the gushing reporters
who wrote up the item prophesied
that it would result in a large and
constantly increasing trade in that
cereal with the Spaniards. This is
simply bosh. Spain is a -wheat-growing
and vv heat-exporting coun
try, and in ordinary times is
under no necessity of irrqiorting'
from the United States or any
where else. As to the recent
shipments being the first, old ex
porters laugh at the idea, for
wheat was shipped from this coast
twelve 3'cars ago to Ferrol Vigo
Cadiz, and other Spanish ports.
Roach's Brazilian line has
been running for nearly a year
without a subsidy. "We have not
heard that John Roach has exhib
ited his balance sheet at Washing
ton. He certainly should be re
quested to do so. If John Roach
has been running his steamships
all this time at a loss, he is a fool.
If the enterprise is a profitable one,
it is a piece of outrageous impu
dence on his part to ash congress
to give him a bonus of 6200,000 a
year for ten years for making
money on his own account. There
would be just as much reason for
yoting a gratuity to the "Western
Union Telegraph company, or to
Mr. Vanderbilt's railroad, or to the
Chemical bank. The people do
not pa' these crushing taxes for
the purpose of bolstering up pri
vate enterprises that are bankrupt,
or of swelling the profits of enter
prises that are successful.
What Slakes a Town?
Kansas Farmer.
A few years ago Mr. Ball, having in
vented a mowing machine, proposed to
the citizens of Canton Ohio, that they
should loan him 10,000 to manufac
ture them at that place. They did it;
and that one manufactory was the nu
cleus around which the following have
gathered: Two immense agricultural
manufactories, one of plows exclusive
l3T,one of stoves and hollow-ware, one of
paper, one mower- knifes, one of sad
dlery and harness, two of furniture,
one of horse-rakes, one of farm wagons,
one of cultivators, one of wrought-iron
bridges, one of soap, besides a large
number of others, more or less exten
sive. Those mentioned are not small
concerns, the machine interest alone
supporting 2,500 people. The town
has trebled in population, quadrupled
in wealth, and the people, satisfied
with the experiment, are still pushing
forward in that direction.
