the Alaska sailed from San Fran

She carries ten 9-inch Dahlgren
runs, one 8-inch rifle, converted
from an 11-i.ich smooth bore, one
GO-pounder rifle, with Gattling
guns as howitzers. She is manned
by 300 men and is a fait staler,
both under sail and steam. The
vessel is al'nost new, having gone
into commission lat Septembe,
and it is thought she will be amply
able to cope vith the difficulty.

Bisoph. Furcell's Financial Stress.
It seems that the financial em
barrassments of Archbishop Pur
cell, of Cincinnati, are so involved
as to be inextricable, and as to oc
casion wonder to the venerable
prelate himself as to how such a
state of affairs should exist. It is
noticeable that he meets with a
wide sympathy in his troubles from
christians of all denominations.
The Enquirer of the 1-Ith instant
contains the following on the sub
ject: Yesterday eleven suits were en
tered against him for money lent
and interest amounting to nearly
$84,000. This action vill doubt
less bring ;a a vast number of other
cla'ms, the amount of which can
scarcely be estimated at this time,
though there is but lit Je doubt but
that they will swell up into mil
lions. AVe are suie there are none,
either CaL'noHc or Protestant, who
know the venerable Archbishop, or
who a--e familiar with his long life
of usefulness to the great church
he represent?, and, through it. to
the world at large, who will not
feel pained when they know that
adverauy h?s ovei taken him in the
of a life so fuH of
good
orks.
An exhibition of Captain
Dickenson's improved method of
reefing fore and aft sails, took
place in New York. The improve
ment consists of a series of bull's
eves arranged in the head and luff
of the sail, with corresponding
bull's eyes attached to the gaff and
to the hoops "on the mast. A rope
is rove through the bull's eyes,
and leads to the deck. In reefing,
the gaff is lowered, the slack of
the rope taken in, and the sail
hauled snugly up to the gaff, and
to the mast, the throat and peak
hailliard then being set taut, mak
ing a secure reef.
