Pursuant to adjournment, the common council met at 7h o'clock Saturday evening, Councilman Gray President presiding. Present a full council with the ex ception of Councilman McCann, ab sent. Officers present E. H. Cardwell, auditor, W. J. Burry chief of police, F. D. "Winton, attorney. Minutes of the jirevious meeting were approved as read. On motion of councilman Shivery, matters laid over at the last meeting were taken up. An ordinance passed appropriating 50 for litigation expanses. An ordinance altering the compens ation of night policeman, lost. An ordinance to regulate and license "certain places of amusement," was lost. An ordinance to provide for and license and regulate bar rooms was adopted. An ordinance to provide for employ ing attorncj's in certain cases was adopted. Resolution relating to salary of the cit3T attorney was referred. President Gray placed the name of Louis Wilson "before the council as a proper person to fill the position of city assessor. The nomination was subsequent withdrawn, and the nomination of B. S. Worslev was confirmed. On motion the council adjourned. SIisiplu Hates. The Chamber of Commerce is in reoeipt of dispatches announcing that: The steamship Oregon arrived m San Francisco sixty hours from Asto ria on Sunday morning. The steamship Great Republic arrived in San Francisco Sunday afte noon, fifty-six hours from Astoria. A vessel given as the Trustoe is 'loading in San Francisco for the Co lumbia river. .Decision Sustained. We learn from reliable sources that the supreme court have sustained the decision of the lower court, Judge Shattuck, in the cause of Welch el. la. v. Jas. Taylor el. al. The decision virtually sets aside what is known as Shively's " Second addition" in Asto riaJiarbor. Court -Proceedings. TOLICE COURT II. B. PARKER, J. Astoria. March 21. Ed. Lieuenweber & Co. have imported a quantity of oak bark to mix with their hemlock bark in the manufac ture of heavy harness leather, for which they have an increased demand. Editor Astekiax: Our city dads are gieat parliamenta rians, they ought one and .all to be m congress so that their lights might en lighten the nation. .Saturday night last, an adjourned meeting from Tues day, they decided that it being an ad journed meeting they could not tal'e up new business, but must begin where they left off, not having left off any where they proceeded to ialx nip new business, in the shape of committee re ports on ordinances referred at the Tuesday session, but they would not take up the protest in regard to the Main stroet lamp. Oh, no! we poor hillsiders must remain in the dark un til the great moguls are ready to lighten our ways, our wives and child ren must grope their way in the dark ness or stumble in the mud, and yet we must pay taxes, that the ways of the councilman may be lighted. Js this even handed jus tice? We have not asked for a police officer to guard our homes, yet we help pay the police force to guard the property of the august meinbersof the council. This action reminds me very much of Itathaifs message which he carried to King David about the poor man's one little ewe lamb. We had one poor little light all we bad, and because forsooth it stuck in the craws of those in power having everything, it is taken from us. But King David suffered for his wrong. Enough. Hillsiukr. AXVSKXJSyTS. Mr. John Maguire, manager of the New Market theatre, returned by the Elder, from a business trip to San Francisco. He has secured for a brief season Barlow, Wilson, Primrose and West's minstrel conipan', which will arrive by the Ancon, and give three entertainments at jIetropolitan hall in Astoria, :is per advertisement in these columns. This company is com posed of twent3T-four persons. Sev eral of them .are famous artists, and have recently won great suceess at the Baldwin theatre, this being the only minstrel company ever permitted to that aristocratic place of amusement. Mr. W. J. Clapham, their business agent, came up on the Elder also. Mr. Maguire has engaged a series of attractions even greatly .surpassing those introduced by him last season, and with a "revised and improved" stock company, Oregon is certain of first-class entertainments. There are two sides to the Main street lamp question. Councilmen tell us that there was no provision made to pay the lamp-lighter for extra duty. Ninety .thousand copies have been sold of WTill L. Thompson's famous song "Gathering Shells from the Sea Shore." It is thought that "Drifting with the Tide," this author's last .com position, will-eveh eclipse "Gathering Shells'' in popularity. Any music dealer will mail either of these beau tiful pieces to your address on receipt of price, 40 cents. The Wallamet and the Clackamas, the Molalla and Mill creek, are all overflowing, .referring to which, in a recent letter Mr. Duniway says: "and in a sad plight .they were, tea.
