A storm of the severest rature swept over Memphis just after midnight on Saturdny last. t OtUtic from the southwest and con tinued for three hours. During its progress, lightning struck the .Memphis cotton and woolen mills, which were entirely consumed. Most rigorous rales are being enforced against vessels arriving ifrom the Mediterranean sea, Red sea, or Sea of Azov, to prevent the infection reaching here. The Italian bark from Trieste, with a cargo of rags, was refused entry, and the vessel ordered into quaran tine at New York on the 22d. A storm has aga'u damaged the dykes in Holland protecting Osongrad, Ssentes, Xasarhely, ambor and Tettel. Complete anarchy prevails at Mandalay. The bulk of the in habitants would welcome British troops. Hopes that an explosion will be averted are growing faint. Journalistic Sznnosicrs. The newspaper fraternity as well as other business men, are sometimes subjected to the impositions of a class of impecuneous bummers pretending to be what they are not. Astoria has been visited by such before, but here they generally defraud the public, whom we have time and again warned to beware of such frauds. The Dallas Itemizer says: A fellow calling himself George Le grand came to Dallas some two months .since with the Wilton troupe and when they got as far as Perrydale he quit the company and returned to this place. He was without money and almost without clothing, with the ex ception of a "plug" hat, which enabled him to "spread on" a little style. After being repeatedly importuned to give the fellow something to do we sent him out to canvass for the Itemizer, and the result is he has "bilked" us, as he will undoubtedly do any one who places any confidence in him. From the Portland Bee we see that he played a game on Prentice & Co. and otlicr business men of Portland, pretending that he was going to get up a business card, and also got the best of L. Samuel, ol the West Shore, to the extent of $30. That paper also says that he has several aliases and that he was once arrested for forger' in California but escaped by turning state's evidence. We hope he will be arrested and punished for his mis deeds. .Foreign Escorts. Since the last report of clearances fiom the Astoria custom house was made for publication in Tun Astoria x, the following vessels have cleared for European ports with cargoes and values as specified. Shipments from Portland are noted as they eccur: To Queenstotvn, per Centennial, March 11. We know how a piece, of good fortune brightens the air: how some im pending evil puts the edge of a spiritual eclipse "upon the sun; how suddenly ill fortune in business will seem to make the very springs of beauty bankrupt; how the sickness of a dear friend turns nature pallid; how the death of one whom we love will convert all the trees to cypresses and the music of the uni verse becomes a requium ; but how can von expect your city to prosper if you (lonot patronize the local press? How can you succeed as a merchant, or a mechanic, and not advertise? $S3rl 'Ad vertising costs money. ' So does'storc-rerrt, so do all good and use ful things.
