The Southern bank of New
Orleans has suspended.
Paul 13o3ton re-commenced
his swim to New Orleans Tuesday
inerninc: from Cincinnati.
Scientific examination of the
sulphur which fell in a shower on
the 17th, over Lehigh valley
prove it to be the pulleu from
species of pine, caught up by the
wind and carried from the Jersey
forests.
Mexico desires to establish
more intimate commercial relations
with the United States. She pro
duces many things largely con
sumed by this country which she
wishes to sell us. and is anxious to
purchase many of our products,
especially machinery of all descrip
tions and manufactures.
The Oliver-Cameron suit is
furnishing ".smutty" reading for
the eastern public. Old Simon
deserves punishment no doubt for
being caught by the shameless
woman. She acknowledges her
shame, but does not seem to re
gard it as a serious matter. The
late lamented Oliver appears in
the court room, and it turns out
that the widow is not a widow.
I n the house a, great crowd was
present to witness the opening' of
the session and organization. Only
representative James, of New York,
was absent. Randall was chosen
speaker on the first ballot. Gar
iiold and Blackburn conducted
Randall to the chair. He made a
brief address and then the oath of
office was administered to the
speaker by Kelly, of Pennsylvania,
after which, oath to members was
administered by the speaker in
groups of states.
Seward, minister to China,
still remains at "Washington. It
is probable that he will be ordered
to return to his post in China.
Kvarts is in a quandary about
Seward, but at the present junc
ture of affairs, when diplomatic
negotiations on the subject of
Chinese immigration are pending,
Seward's knowledge of the situa
tion in the empire is considered
bv the administration invaluable,
hence he will probably remain in
China until the next house im
peaches him.
The New York Times reports
of the actual condition of trades,
manufacturers and other industries
in fourteen states, showing that
the condition of business interests
of the country as compared with
the outlook a year aero at this time
gives promise of a profitable sea
son, the beginning of the return of
national prosperity and assurance
of a general and apparently lasting
revival of business. The Times
says that the unanimity of express
ion as to the favorable outlook is
more trustworthy because each en
quirer was pursuing his investiga
tion entirely unbiased and inde
pendent of any other.

Bi:i:un, March 18. The tariff
commission seems particularly
anxious to secure German industry
against American competition. It
has proposed heavy duties upon
most articles now imported from
America. Its last decision is in
favor of a duty of twenty marks
per hundred -weight on leather
iroods. Protectionists are now
attaking the present coinage sys
tem and recommend the issue of
plenty of money.

During our absence to Puget-soimd
piles of papers were stacked upon our
editorial table. Hastily scanning
them over we found the following,
in the Roseburg Daily Plaindealer:
Our modest a,nd immaculate Gover
nor has again boen violating the rules
of executive deportment by practicing
before a court without the proper
license. The case in question was
rather singular, as it involved an out
lay from the judge as well as from the
cm-tahminh hadi
long neen reported rich, the intrant
the Governor desired to prospect.
Witnesses, though not desired, were
present. The executive plead his case
with such fervency that the judge
immediately decided in his favor, and
at last accounts that gentleman was
busily engaged in sinking a shaft on
the premises. The judge in this in
stance was undoubtedly influenced by
the Governor, which is but another in
stance of democratic reform.
Apparently referring to the above
the Bee says:
We have before alluded to the mat
ter with the sole purpose of bringing
out a denial. Our columns are at the
governor's service and all the influence
we possess will be cheerfully and free
ly given in favor of the right.
Then as if to more deeply intensify
the nvystery, Mrs. Duniway states,
through the New Nerthwest:
As a friend of public decency, we
earnestly entreat Governor Thayer to
save the good name of an innocent
lady, if in his power to do so, br
denying the current scandal at
once, thereby preventing a repetition
of the Beecher-Tilton abomination,
the publication of which has caused
incalculable destruction of good
morals. He will understand us.
The question with us is: "What
does all this mean?"'
The Oregon Churchman says
speaking of the ienten circular by Rev.
0. Parker, "it is well printed." Of
course it is, for it was printed at the
Astorian office, where as good work
can be executed as in any place in
Oregon. This at least is the opinion
of the writer of this, who is in no way
connected with the Astoman office.
A friend suggests that when we
quoted that complimentary article a
few days since on Senator Mitchell
from the North East (Md.), Record
we should have stated that the Record
was a democratic paper. We did not
deem it nccessaiy, because we believe
there are honest men in the democratic
fold, as well as d rascals in the re
publican party.
