A Word to the "Wise Ones.
It is bad policy, at least so it
seems to us, for the press of Ore
jrontobc constantly' endeavoring
to make little or less, in a moral
.sense to lower in character and
ability of our delegation in congress.
Referring to the manner in which
Hon. John Whiteaker was called
to take his seat in the forty-sixth
congress of the United States, ;is
the representative of the people of
this common wealth, we may say at
present the sole representative of
the people of the Pacific states, as
California is not represented at all
and Nevada by one person, of
politics opposite to that of the
dominant party, certain of the
press of the state have been guilty
of gross perversion of facts. And
whether from the too common
error of judging a man from his
politics, or because of personal
hatred, which is too deep seated
for the .good of Oregon, such com
ments are productive of great
injury to the state. There are at
present in the United States JS,

The Pacific states have a repre
sentative of six in the senate, and
.six in the house,r California four,
juid Nevada on e,0 regon one. Eight
"persons represent the GG2,000
people as delegates from the terri
tories; six only, and .at this time
but two, Mr. Whiteaker, and
Mr. Wren, of Nevada, are
there to represent Oregon, Neva
da, and California. What does the
press expect to gain, therefore, by
'belittling Mr. Whiteaker? In the
last congress measures of vital ini-
portance failed because of the
course pursued by the press in op
position to the delegation of men
sent to represent us at Washing
ton. It is time for a change in
this respect; Oregon has too much
to ask at the hands of congress;
.and, besides this, statements are
published which are at variance
with the truth, when the delega
tion from Oregon is attacked. We
pretend to assert, without the
slightest fear of contradiction, that
no fairer minded man than Hon.
John Whiteaker walks the streets
of Washington to-day, and so far
its Senators Grover and Slater are
concerned, the people are too fa
miliar with their record in congress
not to understand the purposes
which actuate their traducers. We
submit, in all candor, to the press
of Oregen: Whether it would
not be far better for us to act like
honest men in these matters, know
:ng the needs of Oregon, and the

reat difficulties in the way of ob
taining necessary appropriations
to assist us in developing this
"wonderful region oT country. We
should stand by the delegation as
a unit.

TVhat is the Meaning!
The Chinese have commenced
buying American iron for ship
ment to China. One hundred tons
were purchased and shipped from
New York a few days ago, saidiComcr of cr an(1 0Iney stree,s'
lo be the first ever made by that
people oil American iron. Here
tofore, they have made their
purchases from the British,
because of the cheaper rate.
Whether this transaction is
the beginning of a more extensive
business in that line, or a sporadic
act dependent upon peculiar cir
cumstances, is not yet evident.
Can it be says the Alta, that the
shrewd Chinese have made this
commencement of a possible future
trade in that line for the purpose
of strengthening the feeling at
the east in favor of their
people's immigration? It is
not impossible, and the influence
of that purchase and shipment,
should it be accepted as the be
ginning of a new branch of trade
with China, is sufficient to make
every eastern dealer in iron ten
times more an advocate of unlim
ited Clrlnese immigration than he
ever was before. Judging some
of the jxjople there by their words
and acts, they would nwt hesitate
to balance the Mongolizing of
California against the sale of a
hundred tons of pig iron.
