S. corvette .Alaska, which arrived Jit S:m Francisco a few days no from Panama, to sail at once for Sitka. She is now taking m stores, and will leave as soon as that is done. The Alaska is a second-rate screw, carries twelve heavy guns besides howitzers and gntlings, and 300 men. U. S. Shipping Commissioner Stevenson on the Kill met a large assemblage of ship masters and consignees, and an agreement was entered into to repress the col lection of blood money by sailor boarding house keepers, which has recently been revived in San Fran cisco. The chief of police has taken steps to cause the arrest of all runners attempting to board ships on entering the harbor. There will be held in the City of Mexico an international exhibi tion of agricultural and industrial products, beginning on the loth of January, 1880, to continue three months. Such an exposition which will bring together men of intelli gence and enterprise of all nations, will be the means of dovclenins: the elements of labor, of correcting serious errors in regard to Mexico, strengthening its present markets and opening new ones, facilitating the construction and operation of rai 1 ways. Eastern Sews. Several inches of snow in Lou isville, Ky., on the 17th. Also a snow storm at St. Louis. It commenced raining at Reading, Pa., Sunday night, and continued until about noon Mon day. All over the city can be noticed a strange j'ellowish deposit resembling sulphur, supposed to have come down with the rain. The steamer Grand Tower arrived at St. Louis on the 17th with 500 more plantation negroes from the south. About one-third of them immediately boarded the steamer Fannie Lewis, for Kansas city, and a like number by railroad. The remainder are in charge of the Colored Benevolent Society, and will be cared for until some other disposition can be made. J. B. Price, an extensive mail contractor of the west, has just closed a contract with the govern ment for fast mail service on the Mississippi river, between St. Louis and New Orleans. Seven steam ers are to be built and placed in the line in 1-iO days from the sign ing of the contract. The vessels will be 150 feet long, 20 feet beam, fast, and will be provided with elegant passenger accommo dations. They are to run the 2,500 with 300 stops in 213 hours. The New York AVorld, on the 1 7th, in an article upon the tene ment house reform, now engaging the attention of prominent men says that people who have been shocked by tales which California has sent of overcrowding in the Chinese quarters of San Francisco, will do well to consider the des cription given of one tenement region in New York in which 75 people are packed so densely that the average space occupied by a whole tenement house family is 10 Astoria, Oregon, Wednesday Morning, H'l' - feet by 11, while the average space allotted them to sleep in is S feet by 10. The New York Tribune of the 17th savs: Yerv well informed writers and dealers on the other side of the ocean believe that the requirements of France alone will exceed 20,000,000 bushels of wheat. The deficiency of importations from that country by Great Britian thus far plainly indicates that an increased demand from that country must sooner or later be felt. On account of the plague, traffic with ports on the Black Sea has been and is likely to be very much restricted. Movements of wheat from southern Russia and the regions of the lower Danube can hardly bo relied upon to meet the existing deliciencv of Great Britain. The truth is that the British market is relying upon a practically unlimited supply in this country, and should it prove that the demand comes close to or exceeds the actual supply our prices may rise somewhat sharply within the next two months. One prominent merchant stated on Saturday that the fact that wheat was two cents lower than it fell f durinir the Keene excitement was absolute proof that the report of a portion ol Ins wheat being sold was true. "Wa;Iiinj;loii Reports. Congressman AYhiteaker of Orqgon arrived at 10 a. m. on Monday, having made the fastest time on record across the con tinent. In the democratic caucus Monday night the first ballot for speaker resulted as follews: Randall 75; Blackburn, 57;McMa- hon, 3; Morrison, 2; Cox, 4. AYhen the result of the balloting was made known to Blackburn he went into the hall, and in an eloquent speech moved that Ran dall's nomination be made unani mous. Kandall expressed heart felt thanks for the honor conferred, and the caucus adjourned. Republican representatives un animously nominated Gen. Garfield. The following resolution was adop adep ted: Resolved, That it is the sense of this caucus that no legislation should be entered upon during this session of congress other than that for which the session was specifically called." Only one vote was cast against the adop tion of this resolution. Durin" the preliminary interchange of views, a very general desire was expressed that the session should be of short duration. Political topics were not discussed. Some days since, says the Stand ard, we published an account of the arrest of the man who stopped at Hager's house the night previous to the murdor. It was thought he was the man, so Sheriff Pillsbury with a six shooter and a pair of handcuffs went flying up the road to Oakland where the "murderer" was working O To his disgust he found a man who had been spotted by the wonderful detective, that no more resembled the man suspicioned as described than a Clydesdale stallion does a dromedary We know that Bruder was innocent, and think this German, whose trail they are on, is also innocent, and we begin to think the Chinamen are in nocent too. The air is thick with disturbing rumors. The telegraph flashes ugly news that Russia is angry with Germany and Austria and officially declares that the plague has ceased, and re quests her neighbors to remove the restrictions on her commerce. France makes a strange con J ccntration of her troops on the Belgium frontier. Russian agents help to revive reports .that Ger many desires to annex Holland creating quite a panic among the better class of the Dutch. It is even reported that war lis expected and that France will "strike at Germany's power by taking Bel gium and the latter Holland. Where there is so much smoke there must be fire. Latterly Ger many has been imperious toward Holland. Turning to Asia and Africa, the British are evidently taking per manent possession of important points of conquered territory and mean to go to Cabul and also He rat if convinced that Russia has the same intention, though as at present advised it will not be sur prising if Russia gets there first. The Irish paper, The Nation, publishes a chant for the Zulus, calling on God to help them against the British, glorifying the butchery at Isandula Jind praying that they may drive the Ted coats into the sea.
