News' special from Szegedin says: Since the last telegram the water has risen in the town five feet. The situa tion iat;becoming worse and worse. Sixty thousand persons are without roof to cover them. It is feared the loss of life has been very great and it will increase during this terrible night. The foregoing, coming directly from the spot, is probably more trustworthy than the official account previously re ceived from Pesth, Violent attacks in the Hungarian diet possibly caused the government to make its report of the disaster, as favorable as possible. Accounts of the disaster received from Vienna say the upper floors of all iie high houses are crammed with people in momentary fear of death. It is thought some few houses which are built of stone ma' stand. One hundred square miles in the neighborhood of Szegedin are flooded. Crops in the district are lost. The government has sent 40,000 flourins for the relief of the inhabitants. Radi cals in the diet violently attack the government for neglecting to take precautions to prevent the calamity. Several fires have occurred, and there are strongs suspicions . of incen diarism. The water is yet rising, but the communication toward Tenesvar is still open. The irruption of the waters came so sudderb that workmen barely had time to. reach town. Am ple provision of boats has been made throughout the town, but it is feared that such an inundation happening in the depth of night cannot but drown J many .persons. The Flood Increasing. estji, March 13. Evening The danger in Szegedin is.incrcasing. Res cuing boats continually strike ruins so that in many cases to rescue the suf ferers is impossible. A boat capsized by which seven women were drowned. A violent storm is raging and the flood is continually rising, and is now two feet above the level of the Theiss. Unsubmerged area has been reduced to GOO square metres, which continual ly decrcjiscs. At the first irruption of the water 35 soldiers were drowned. The state railway carried gratuitously 10,000 fugitives j'esterday. Summarizing official and private ac counts the dead must amount to many hundreds. It is impossible to. make a close estimate as the number buried under the ruins connot yet be ascer tained. The houses built of sun-dried brick continued to collapse long after the inrush of tho flood. The work of feeding and removing the sufferers is now proceeding with great ardor. Sen sational stories of hundreds being buried in the sjmagogue and military hospital are without foundation. ftcllcf Top the SnOcrc.. The Hungarian ministtr of finance left for Szegedin with 200,000 fiorinB to be ditributed among sufferers of the inundation. The greater part of the town of Szegedin was destroyed and several hundred people perished. Six steamers and twenty tugs left Pesth for Szoge din. At noon Thursday there were etill persons on the roofs of the houses and in the trees. Some persons died from exposure to the cold.
