Mrs. Gen. Sherman died on
the 12th, at Newport. The General
is so low that it was deemed advi
sable not to inform him of his wife's
death at present. Physicians have
but slight hopes of his recovery.
Mrs. Sherman receiiHy underwent
a severe surgical operation and
this undoubtedly was the immedi
ate cause of her death.
An ice gorge formed at Far
randisville, Pa., extending a dis
tance of three miles and piling the
ice up 30 feet high on the 12th.
It gave way at 10 o'clock, carrying
everything before it until it reached
the Queen Run railroad bridge,
which withstood the shock. The
ice, passing on, reached Lockhaven
at 11 o'clock, and the water rose
four feet and carried the ice far
up the banks along the city front.
The damage at Queen Run and
Farrandsville is very heavy.

neighborhood are crumbling down.

London, March 12 A dispatch
from Szegedin this morning says
that after a fearful night of anxiety
all the efforts prove useless and
the water broke through with im
mense force at 3 o'clock, carrying
away a part of the railway station,
the embankment and the rolling
stock. Within three hours the
town was many feet deep in water.
Shrieks and cries from thousands
are heard, houses are crashing by
the score, and in many cases carry
ing their inmates with them. God
knows what we shall do to-night.
There is no gas, the works being
"fifteen feet in water, and'X fear we
shall run short of food. One boat
was just going to save a large
house full of people when a fear
ful crash carried with it the whole
living freight. The scene is sim
ply heartrending. Over S0,000
people are out of house and home,
hundreds are drowning, and the
water is still rising rapidly.
Pesth, March 12. Latest tele
grams announce that the flood with
a terrific roar in rushing from two
sides over Szegedin. The horror
of the situation baffles dercription.
The town is, in fact, destroyed.
Two-thirds are now submerged,
including the citadel and post and
telegraph offices. Whole rows of
buildings are falling. The orphan
age and synagogue are destroed;
all the inmates of the former are
buried in the ruins. Two manu
factories are on fire. The innabi
tants are flying to New Szegedin
and the more elevated parts of the
town. The municipality of Pesth
is making every effort to send as
sistance to Szegedin. Two relief
trains have started. Accommoda
tions for fugitives have been pro
vided in the barracks and public
buildings at Pesth.
London, March 12. An official
telegram confirms the report of the
terrible aspect of Szegedin and the
destruction of hundreds of houses.
It states that the removal of, the
inhabitants is proceeding without
disorder. So far only four corpses
had been found. The dams are
being cut in several places to allow
the water to run off. No excesses
are reported, but precautions have
been taken for the protection of
J231t is a fact long since established,
says the Helena Herald, that the mer
chant who liberally patronizes the ad
vertising columns of the press, sells his
wares cheaper than the one whose name
is seldom or ever seen. The reason is
patent, for by thus advertising, his sales
are trippled and a less proportionate
profit makes him the greatest gainer.
