Card from W. K.. tcverldjje.
San Francisco, March 7th, 1879.
Kd. Asterian:
I received a telegraph notice in your
paper,advertising the dissolution of the
ilrm of Leveridge & Erindle, also stat
ing that I had been guilty if gross
conduct announced by Judge Thorn
ton, signed R. D. Hume, all of which
I denounce as false in every -ense of
the word, as the court has never or
dered the firm dissolved jret, or did
tlie court declare me guilty of any
gross conduct; all of which was done
to try to injure me among myifriends,
And I think your article in yoor paper
& little premature, without (knowing
jiy of the ciscumstances, and as I have
always had the most friendly feelings
toward you and your paper, I can't
understind -why you should tike a
part against me in the matter. I will
prove to my friends and ihe world too
hat I have been falsely represented

Our Coming Steamer.
ToSlugtfie Sailing Qualities r the State
of California A Fast Vessel.
FtiiladelphM Ttuu.
The steamship State of California,
built by Messrs. Cramp & Sonsior the
rjlciIic &s. steamship company to
replace her namesake, now the Europe
of the Russian navy, reached her
wharf yesterdaj' afternoon after a trial
voyage of fifty-one hours. The Cali
fornia is an iron vessel of 2.2(50 tons
i registered ton na and 315 feet over
all, 37 feet beam and 2G feet in depth.
Her engines are compound surface
condensing, with 42-inch ami 37 -inch
-cylinders, 51-inch stroke and are 2,000
horse power. Her six return tubular
boilers can maintain eighty pouno's of
steam. She is fitted with improved
steam steering gearing and her appli
ances for freeing the ship of water
are of the most approved pattern.
In case of lire two hso -connections
can be made on each deck and
she carries eight life-boats and four
life-rafts. Thec&bins arc handsomely
finished in walnut and mahogany,
and the dining saloon, 10 feet by 37
feet, will scat 140 jcrsons, The state
rooms, heated by steam as is the en
tire vessel, are -as comfortable as
limited space will allor., and 200 first-
class and 200 second-class passengers
can be accommodated. Six electric
lights will illuminate the cabins and
engine rooms, and a head light on
the bov will light p the ship's path
for a distant of two and a quarter
miles. This light' is like those placed
on the Russian vessels, and has the
attachment for keeping the sparks in
focus of the reilector, designed and
invented especially for them by Lieu
tenant Khotiusky, of the Russian
navy.
The California was constructed
under the supervision of Superintend
ing Engineer Pusey, of the Pacific
Coast Steamship company, and is the
first vessel ever buiit in this country
under the rules and inspection of the
British Lloyds, by which her rating in
the highest cluss for twentr years is
insured. During her trial voyage
ample opportunity was given to test
her -sailing qualities, there being a stiff
breeze and heavy sea on, but during
the tnnn up the coast to Absecon light
she maintained an average speed of
fourteen knots (about sixteen and one-
fourth miles) an hour, and show-
cd -herself as staunch -&nd sea
worthy as could be desired. The trip
was -made under the immediate su
pervision of Messrs. Win. and J.
guest of the Messrs. Cramp, and was
very satisfactory to all concerned.
The California will take a good cargo,
and list of passengers on her voyage
out'to San Francisco, between which
.port and Portland, Oregon, she is
to ply.
