ASTORIA FIRE DEPARTMENT. i Pari lie Coast Dispatches. Cattle are reported dying in the interior of British Columbia where a thaw has set in. The losses at Reno by the fire will not fall short of one million dollars. Insurance 250,000. Troy Dye, who procured the murder of Tullis last summer, in order that he might obtain the fees that would come to him as public administiator, will be hanged at Sacramento on Thursday of next week (loth.) His accomplice Ed ward Anderson, will be hanged with him. The workingmen's delegation to the constitutional convention were received at San Francisco on their arrival from Sacramento on Tucs daT,by the ward presidents, headed by the tenth ward Independent Rifles, and escorted to Horticul tural hall, where speeches were made and resolutions passed en dorsing the new constitution and calling upon the workingmfn s party to support it. At the Grand Opera house Monday evening the Passion play was produced. For several days past the press and pulpit have at tacked the undertaking vigorously, and there was some expectation that the performance would not be allowed to go on. i fact the board of supervisors on Tuesday evening passed to print an ordi nance forbidding the production of any play in which the life of Jesus Christ or any scriptural oc curanees was portrayed, but as the ordinance cannot take immediate effect the perform en ce is likely to run a week or two if it meets with sufficient patronage. There was a very respectable attendance Tuesda3r evening in point of numbers and character, and the performance was receiv ed with respectful attention. The play was w-ell mounted, the music excellent and the principal eharcaters well sustained. The last act, announced as the tableau of lm dpsp.r'nt from the cross, from Reuben's celebrated painting, was omitted, which caused some little confusion, the audience being in -doubt as to whether the perform ance was over or not until the mat ter was explained to them. Aside iirom the incongruousness of a representation of the kind on the atrical boards, there was nothing in the performance to shock the most fastidious. PcnmansHp of Autior. Louisville Courier-Jdttrnal. Joaquin Miller writes a hand 'which it is almost impossible to read. Swinburne does likewise, using a quill pen. Walt. Whit man also wields a quill, but his writing is large, bold, careless and distinct. Ruskin's chirography is as fine as if written with a pin point. Lowell writes a lactylike, running hand, very plain, with the exception of his signature. Froude's penmanship is distinct and fine; Kate Field's square and bold; George MacDonald's large and manly, and William Winter's is like forked lightning. Robert Buchanan writes" an easily read, affectedly literary hand, as though he was trying to be unintelligible, but did not like to be altogether so. He also decorates his letters with boyish curly-cues. Mrs. 'Oliphant writes worse than any 'body else, apparently using the point of a hair, CJ.TUENTirAKI).-. KIIEDJ. FEHOHEN. J. W. GEAltUAltT...
