How to employ authority.

Then the little cocksparrow "looked
dainty and grand,
And threw back his head, like the lord

A venerable old owl who lived over a
hill.
Kept hooting and hooting, andsnapping
his bill;
His brain it was addled; his feathers
were gray,
lie was too old to preach, and too feeble

So he thought he would feather and
poison an arrow;

He gathered around him some foul birds
"of prey.
Whose mistiness suited to mix in the

Said he "Give me venom to poison my

cocksparrow."
Tov this little cocksparrow sat up in a
tree,
And the sweetest of songs from his
throat warbled lie
That around him he gathered the bright
birds of song,
To list to the harmony floating along
Thro' the air. The owl heard of the
refrain.
Said he. "That song cuts me deep into
the grain.
This sparrow's too liberal he makes
all the birds glad,
I would have them be miserable gloomy
and sad ;
I am wretched myself; what right then
has he,
To warble sweet songs away up in that
tree,
The confounded, abominable, young
little elf,
Will make every bird think he can think
for himself;
Come hand me my bow, till I let fly my
arrow
And I'll put an extinguisher on the
cocksparrow."
So his bow he raised carefully up to his
eye,
And steadily tried to let the vile arrow
fiy,
But this bird, whose mean deeds are all
done in the dark,
Sent the arrow pirouetting far wide of
the mark.
And the little cocksparrow away up in
the tree,
Gave a wink of his eye and said Uey-
D1DDLE-DEE.
Now, old owl, if you can take a word of
advice, .
Tor your conduct you know can t be
called very nice,
In sack-cloth and ashes I pray you
repent,
And make a good use of this season of

prayer
Are dancing, cards, playing, and wine?
From life's burdens and cares 1 am

Yet your innocent jovs I share
And most earnestly ask, for experience
sake
That of all that is foul you 11 beware.
And when "in the dark' on my bed I
commune
With Him who doth answer and hear,
1 pray that you all, in your bright youth
ful glee,"
Be, in reason, restrained by his fear.
And oh ! as my gray beard is bowed on
my breast,
In "wretchedness" thank Godmine
own.
I nlead that each one, in the evening of
life.
Be consoled as 1 am "nearer Home."
Yes, nearer the God I've long well tried
to serve,
"Though so often bent under TlisTroil,
And nearer the sweet rest that ever
remains
For the earth worn, aged people of God.
And now just a word to each one of this
flock
In your hearts let more charity reign
If you really are Christ's, in your words

Shivclys Astoria, between the west end of
