Lot Bliss, the 17th victim of
the Stockton explosion, died on
Wedn esday.
An attempt to burglarize the
first National gold bank of Petalu
ma, was made Tuesday night.
Entrance to the building was ef
fected through a skylight, letting
the burglars down upon the top of
the vault. They had nearly re
moved the brick covering, when
either the task here revealed was
too great, or being alarmed, the
job was abandoned.
The mystery of a man coming
ashore in a row boat under murder
ous circumstances at Berkeley a
lew nights ago is being investigat
ed by detectives, but their labor
has only intensified the mystery.
The boat belonged to John French,
a boatman by occupation, 417
Drum m street. Between 6 and
t o'clock on Sunday evening
French was seen to embark in his
boat at Vallejo street wharf
in company with another man.
He rowed out, and when last
seen by persons on shore the boat
was headed for the Berkeley shore.
Who French's companion was in
the boat has not yet been ascer
tained. The boat however, was
covered with blood when found
the following morning, and an ex
amination of the beach where it
was discovered, showed the foot
prints of only one person having
left -it.- - The blood on--the -.-boat
and the single line of footprints
induce the belief among detectives
that one of the two men may have
murdered the other and thrown
his body into the bar.
Eastern States.
The census bill as it passed
the house, provides that enumera
tion shall commence on the first
Monday in June, and that returns
shall be forwarded to the super
visor on or before the 1st of July,
18S0.
The American excusionists to
Mexico are returning disappointed.
They see but little hope of extend- :
ing trade under the present Mexi
can tariff and in the face of the
jealousy and opposition of Mexi
cans to American railroads and
other enterprises.
The Chicago Times, discuss
ing the Chinese bill says : " Far
seeing men of all shades of politi
cal opinion have recognized the
ffact that the country will never
permit itself to be mongolianized.
Even if this effort has no result,,
the agitation will serve to enlight
en the public, and pave the way

Rich silver and gold deposits
have been discovered In Mcnomo
nee county, Michigan, near Mari
nette, Wisconsin. Of three speci
mens of iron ore sent to Chicago
for analysis one yielded 16 gold
and silver per ton. There has
been over 75,000 tons of iron ore
shipped from the mine during the
past season, which undoubtedly
contained millions of dollars in
gold and silver.

been abandoned and is considered
a complete wreck.
