TELEGRAPHIC NEWS.
Pacific Coast Dispatches.
The United States revenue
cutter, Oliver "Wolcott, has sailed
for Sitka.
The ship Belvidere made the
run from San Francisco to Victoria
in six days, arriving on the 21st.
Another foul murder has oc
curred near San Francisco. De
tectives have been detailed to work
up the case.
A letter from Yale on the 16th
says that the snow storm had been
of the most terrible description.
The roads everywhere are blocked,
fences invisible and landmarks
hidden.
In Stockton on the 24th, the
funerals of most of the victims of
the late explosion occurred. Banks,
public schools, saloons and all
business houses were closed, in
conformity with the mayor's proc
lamation. The county and district
courts adjourned also.
Geo. C. Perkins, president of
the San Francisco chamber of com
merce , addressed a communication
to Mayor Bryant, notifying him
that at a meeting of the chamber
a resolution was adopted request
ing him to call a mass meeting of
citizens for the purpose of petition
ing the president of the United
States to approve the bill restrict
ing the immigration of Chinese.
The board resolved to act as a
whole in conjunction with the may
.or to call a mass meeting and im
mediate action will be taken.
Sacramento, Oakland, and other
cities speak out in the matter also.
Eastern Slates.
David Pender, who garroted
Mrs. De Bary., on Fifth avenue,
New York, and tore her diamonds
from her ears, was sentenced to
prison for 30 years on the 25th.
-Capt. Tyson, the Arctic navi
gator, has sued Capt. Howgate,
claiming 35000 damages for the
loss of a position in the navy yard,
Gapt. Howgate failing to secure
the place for Tyson according to
promise.
On the 25th the Cincinnati
Volks-freund, the German Catho
lic orjran, demands a statement of
the affairs of Archbishop Purcell,
which it has reason to fear may be
worse than represented. German
Catholics charge that the money,
much of which is their own, lias
gone to build Irish churches.
Among the incidents in the
house of representatives on Tues
day was a charge preferred by
McMahon, against the appropri
ation committee, which he said had
exceeded its power and deceived
the house by legislating upon the
payment of arrears of pensions to
the disadvantage of certain classes
of soldiers. This brought members
bv groups into the area before
the speakers desk, and the ex
citement was intense.
The enrolled bill for the re
striction of Chinese immigration
was signed by the presiding offi
cers on Monday afternoon as soon
after it was read' for their signa
tures as they could respectfully
find opportunities, the rules requir
ing that their signatures shall be
affixed and announced in open
session. The bill was then placed
in the hands of Rainey, of South
Carolina, member of the house.
The committee on enrolled bills
were to convey it to President
Hayes at the commencement of
business hours on Tuesday morn
ing. The president's intention in
regard to it, if formed, are still
diplomatically guarded by himself
and the members of his cabinet.
Foreign XSTcivs.
The committee appointed to
superintend the burning of infect
ed houses in plague districts of
Russia has begun operations.
It is thought that Lord Duffer
in's appointment as ambassador to
St. Petersburg may lead to a re
newel ol the zone dividing the
spheres of the two powers in Asia.
Queen Victoria will visit the
continent this spring, going first to
Italy, where she will spend some
time at Bavens, and afterwards
visitinir Cobur? and Darmstadt.
A dam burst on the 25th,
above Warsaw, in Poland, owing
to drift ice. Vistula river banks
have been broken by ice and there
is a great inundation and vast des
truction of property.
The state of Oregon is a great
state. It is about 350 miles long,
east and west, and 275 wide, north
and south; bein? nearly square and
quite regular in its outline. It con
taming in round numbers about 95,000
square miles a little over, and conse
quently, about 60,000,000 acres. Is
greater area than New York and
Pennsylvania combined. It is the
third state in extent, ranking next to
California, the latter beinej the second,
ranking next to Texas, the greatest.
