New York, Feb. 17. The Times
editorially says of Alska: What is a
government by a collector of customs 1
It was a great mistake to withdraw
the handful of troops left in Alaska.
We have given over Alaska to abso
lute anarchy. It may be woith while
to organize a territorial government
for Alaska, But if Alaska is not to
be abandoned to primitive barbarians
and devastation the authority of the
United States must be maintained.
New York, Feb. 18. There is
little chance of the president vetoing
the Chinese bill. He has repeatedly
expressed himself favorable to the re
striction of Chinese immigration.
Secretary Evarls, however, opposes
Nummary repudiation of treaty obliga
gations, and will do all he can to in
duce the president to veto it.
Detroit, Feb. 18. Zach. Chandler
"was elected United States senator by
S8 to 40.
New York, Feb. 18. The bark
Clara leaves for Australia to morrow
with a full load of sewing machines,
express wagons, organs, household
furniture, pumps, clocks, stoves and
cutlery.
Washington, Feb. 18. The propo
sition to tax coffee 2h cents a pound
was rejected by the senate. The
amendment to tax tea ten cents per
pound was rejected yeas, 4; nays, 57.

have died of typhus fever within a
few days.
St. Petersburg, Feb. 18. A strike
has occured in two large cotton mills
here for increased pay, elimination of
the hours ot labor, and the dismissal
of English foremen.
Lodon, Feb. 18. The summary
prohibition of the importation of cat
tle from the United States is calcu
lated to deprive England of the ad
yantages of cjieap meat,

San Francisco, Feb, 18. Two
ocean steamers bore away to-day 350
Chinese. Eighty-five of them for
Honolulu, under contract to labor on
sugar plantations.
Sacramento, Feb. 18. News is at
hand here of the complete flooding of
Grand Island, in Colusa county, lay
ing some 2,500 acres of wheat under
water.
San Francisco, Feb. 19. A.Hong
kong dispatch says that L. Otis Hall,
the San Francisco bank thief, cannot
be returned to California for trial, but
that he has been compelled to disgorge
much of his ill-gotten gains. His steal
was $56,000.
Victoria, Feb. 18. The British
war steamer Osprey sailed at 12
o'clock, noon, for Sitka.
