The Times editorially says of Alska: What is a government by a collector of customs 1 It was a great mistake to withdraw the handful of troops left in Alaska. We have given over Alaska to abso lute anarchy. It may be woith while to organize a territorial government for Alaska, But if Alaska is not to be abandoned to primitive barbarians and devastation the authority of the United States must be maintained. Chandler "was elected United States senator by S8 to 40. New York, Feb. 18. The bark Clara leaves for Australia to morrow with a full load of sewing machines, express wagons, organs, household furniture, pumps, clocks, stoves and cutlery. Washington, Feb. 18. Sixteen soldiers in the barracks near the military school have died of typhus fever within a few days. St. Petersburg, Feb. 18. The summary prohibition of the importation of cat tle from the United States is calcu lated to deprive England of the ad yantages of cjieap meat, Pacific Coast Dispatches. Otis Hall, the San Francisco bank thief, cannot be returned to California for trial, but that he has been compelled to disgorge much of his ill-gotten gains. His steal was $56,000. Victoria, Feb. 18.
