The ra!sOai assigned is that Jay Gorld sold to a pool of speculative capitalists 100,000 shares at 875. Gould was holder of 170,000 shares, and of these he has sold 100,000 at a price not far from $70. The anxiety here is extreme. ViBGDfiA, Feb. 17. -At three o'clock yesterday afternoon orders were re ceived discharging all the men on the Sutro tunnel except Superintendent and foreman. At about the same time hot water from the flooded mines was pumped into the tunnel from the combination shaft, filling the tunnel with steam. This morning several parties who tried to enter were driven back by the steam. Sulro expresses much indignation at the action. Ho denounces it as a bluff game io compel him to accede to demands. About sixty inches of water of a temperature 13l is flowing through the tunnel, filling it with clouds of steam, so that all access to it is impossible. What we Like. To hear a man try to borrow his neighbors paper. And the neighbor have courage enough to reply: l would as soon lone you my tooth brush ;' to have a party hnauine that he can do as much business without ad vertising as lie can with it; to look at the blank astonishment that settles down on that man's face when, after trvihe a month, he finds th.it it cannot be done; to see a man refuse to take his local paper and all the time sponge on his neighbor for the use of his; to hear a man comnlain when we ask him to sub scribe for his home paper, that he takes more papers now than he can read, and then go around and borrow his neigh bor's or loaf about him until he gets the news from it; to see a man run down his home paper as not worth taking, and every now and then beg the editor for a favor in the editorial line; to see a man refuse to advertise in a home paper, and then try and get a share of trade that the paper is instrumental in bring ing to his door; to see a man who is able to pay for his local payer, always man age to be around in time to read it at the expense of a friend not worth the tenth part of what he himself is, it looks so economical, thrifty, and progressive, you know. JSXji advertisement in a newspa per is worth forty "directory' cards and other foolish imitations. The paper is seen every day by hundreds, while the book is noticed by only a very few.
