ZJIetropolitan Hall.
Lesse and manager Mr. C. H. Stock
ton. If ever we wrote an article in praise
of a worthy object now is our oppor
tunity. The old hall, famiiiaty Tcnown
as Liberty-hall, has been leased for a
time bv our enterprising fellow towns
man Mr. C. H. Stockton, and under
gone one of the most complete chang
es that has ever taken place in our
young city, under the rapia and skill
ful designing of the lessee. The walls
and veiling having been frescoed and
panneled in the highest style of the
art, woodwork and seats having been
pawled and grained, to correspond
with the fresco work. And we might
add that the inside of the main build
ing is oqual to any theatre in the
-north-west. The stage has been
entirely changed, having been made
five feet higher, with five entire
changes of scenery, flys, wings and
traps complete, and the parescenium
having been ornamented with two
beautiful pictures in colors. The new
drop curtain is a marvel of beauty,
with a panoramic view of our city,
thirteen feet by sir. Green and
property rooms complete. There has
also been added a most complete box
office, and hat and cloak room, at the
front entrance, and in conclusion we
can only add that we wish the new
lcs-see all the success in the world
as he certainly deserves for his enter
prise in this matter, giving us at once
a first class theatre from a fifth rate
hall, and we would also add, that Mr.
Worslev beinsr desirous of giving his
patrons a treat, has engaged Metro
politan hall for the coining grand
masquerade on Friday evening next,
where they will have every want sup
plied as to dressing rooms and comfort.
"Hip, hip"; for Stockton and Metro

Yesterday forenoon one of Astoria's
enterprising citizens went out on to

shovel the snow off the adjacent side

surprise when he did start down
town ai finding that Hie last

has disappeared from sight,
and the atmosphere was as pleasant as

Trichina in Pish.
Fred Mather, the well-known pisci
culturist, is editing a very interesting
fishing department in the Chicago
Field. In a recent article he refers to
the reports that trichina had been
found in fish, dissents i herefrom viuor
ously, and offers to eat any fish said to
be affected by them. Mr. Mather
then enters into some details on the
general subject of parasites in man,
and finally sums up as follews: "We
think we are correct in asserting that,
so far as is known, there is no evidence
that any human being has suffered
from parasites produced by eating fish.''
Sir. Mather speaks as one having au
thority, and his opinion will tend to
allay any alarm that the report may
have created.

The bulk of cargo of the Hera con

terday. Mr. J. B. Foster, with whom we
have been acquainted very many long
yeacs, is in the city, -stopping at the
Occident. He is here as a representa
tive of one of the largest cigar manu
facturing firms on the Pacific coast,
Messrs Win. Lewis & Co., and we will
vouch for any statements made by
Foster relating to the stock of that
house.

During iis last visit to "Salem,
Sheriff Twilight paid 19 cents on the
smelling committee report submitted
by "Gave Thompson and the statesman
from Yamhill. This leaves rl.an even
thousand and seventy-three dollars.
Twilight says he likes to keep things
"even," and even would be glad if the
smelling committee would come out
with even pay due him for previoue
services.
Our valued correspondent "M,"
is mistaken, if he supposes The Asto
RiS favors Chinese immigration, or is
in any way opposed to giving the soldier
what justly belongs to him. And itaa
nevertheless a fact that there is less
pauperism in Oregon, compared to
any other part of the world. We say
that the back pension bill-as it passed
congress opens the door to ataapen
dous frauds, and will cost the country
more than congressmen anticipated,
because of ignorance, or something
worse, in the Pension bureau, which
failed to furnish reliable data as to
the wms necessary to carry .out dhe
previsions of the bilL
Conundrum.

Wonderful
He is not Noah, nor Noah's son,
nor a Levite, nor John the Baptist,
nor yet the wandering Jew, for he was
with Noah in the nrk; the Scriptures
fiaake mention of him, particularly in
St. John, St. Murk and St. Luke, so
that we may believe he is no imposter.
He knows no parents, he never lay
upon his mother's breast; his beard is
such as no man ever wore; he goes
bare-footed and bare-legged, like a
grave old friar. He wears no hat in
summer or winter, but often appears
with a crown upon his head. His
coat is neither knit nor spun, nor hair,
silk, linen, or woolen, bark nor sheep
skin, yet it abounds with a variety of
colors and fits close to the skin. H e
is wonderfully temperate; he never
drinks anything but cold water; he
would rather take his dinner in a
farmer's barn than in a kings palace.
He is very watchful; he sleeps not in
bed, but sits in a singular kind of chair,
with his clothes on. He was alive at
the crucifixion. Nearly all the world
hear him. He once preached a short
sermon, which convinced a man of his
sin, and caused him to weep "bitterly.
He never was married, yet he lias
favorites whom he .oves dearly, for if
he has out one morsel of meat he
divides it among them. Though he
never r.ides on horse-back, he is in
some respects equipped as horsemen
are. He is an advocate of early risimr,
though he never retires to bed. His
prophecies are so true that the moment
j?ou hear his voice you may know what
is approaching.
Now, who is this prophet, and what
did he foretell? Answers solicited.
