PRESIDENT HAYES' VICTORY OVER ROSCOE CONKLING. THE NEW YORK NOMINATIONS CONFIRMED. FRIENDS OF CONKLING OPEN LY CHARGE BRIBERY. THE ARMY REDUCTION DEFEATED. BILL New York, Fob. 4. Simply non sense is th'j story of dise;ise among cattle reared in the west. During the time of prohibition the Canadians will be enabled to dispose of their distillery fed cattle. Washington, Feb. -L The univer sal topic of comment in Washington is the action of the senate on the New York custom house nominations. The largeness of the majority for confir mation is a matter of astonishment to almost ever3T one and explanations differ widety. The result is however, attributed to jiressure brought to bear by members of the cabinet. And, secondly, to exertions made bj Bayard and other leading democrats to con vince a majority of their colleagues that party policy dictated a course in opposition to that taken by the ma jority of the republicans. Friends of Colliding openly charge bribery. The house, in committee of the whole on the army appropriation bill, defeated, by a large majornVp, an amendment reducing the army to 17, 000. All mat ters of difference between Sntro and the mining companies, with reference to the latters use of his tunnel, have been adjusted. Santa Cnuz, Feb. 4. This forenoon two quite severe shocks of earthquake wore felt. Land Titlos. Walla Walla ITawm. There is perhaps, no source of litiga tion so prolific as that of carelessness in land titles. We find persons of good business ability in other matters, who own large tracts of land for 3Tears, and have no assurance that the title is per fect. Either through carelessness or a false idea of economy they neglect to procure an abstract of their real estate. Perhaps one-half of the land-owners in Walla Walla county do not posses a oerfect title to their real-estate. A mis take may have been made in the deed; a deed perhaps misplaced and never recorded, an improper acknowledg ment of the instrument taken, or some other irregularity appears that ouglt to bo cured. Years afterward, when the parties executing the con veyance have passed away, a long and expensive lawsuit is the result. These mistakes can be remedied at a slight expense if attended to while the parties are living. Every careful, prudent man should procure a reliable abstract to his land. On resigning his seat to Judge Green, rccenily, in Seattle, Judge Lewis remark el: The gin mills have triumphed in persuading the powers that be that a change should be made, and 3 rejoice that Omnipotence has placed in my stead a man so conscientious and pure as Judge Green; a man wlm has neither friends to reward, nor enemies to fear. Many of the best citizens bear testimony to the good influence that Judge Lewis has exeited in promoting law and order in his district. There is an element in that region composed of the most depraved and reckless members of society, and they were so numerous that for years they almost openly bid defiance to the officers in their attempts to suppress gambling: dens, squaw-brothels, illegal liquor traffic, etc., but under Jndjre Lewie1 administration they have been taught t'lat they must obey the mandatesof tne law.
