Cincinati, Feb. 2. The commit
tee appointed to receive and audit
claims of depositors against Archbishop
Purcell have already received evi
dences of indebtedness amounting to
over a million dollars, mainly persons
whose hard earned savings from
meager wages were deposited with the
two prelates. The property in the
hands of the trustees to meet those
demands, has a market value of not
more than $800,01)0. Threats of suits
are beginning to be heard.
Washington, Feb. 3. In the house
a motion to suspend the rules and pass
a bill for the issue of forty millions of
four per cent, bonds for the payment
of pension arrearages, was defeated.
In the house to-day, Scales, of

The New York appointments have
been confirmed.
The house refused to suspend the
rules and adopt a resolution making

London, Feb. 3. The origin of
the plague is thus given: A Cossack
returning from the war brought his
lady love a shawl, which she wore two
days and sickened with all the symp
toms of the plague and died. The
disease spread rapidly. The panic in

v.v tion between the rest of Russia and
. . the Volga. . Some people refuse to
-fc . take paper money,-fearing that germs

has taken possession of the people.
The German amb;iss?idorat St. Peters
burg has advised his government that
the plague is spreading rapidly.
Rio Janeiro, Feb. 2. -It is reported
that the black plague has mado its ap
pearance in the province of Ceara.
Five doctors liave been sent there.
Ottawa, Feb. 2. The govornment
passed an order in council prohibiting
the importation of American cattle into
Canada.
Jellalabad, Feb. 2. Yakoob Khan
has written to .Major Cavagnan dis
tinctly declining the British demands
and evincing a determination to hold
Cabul in accordance with the orders
of his father.
Gibralter, Feb. 2. It is feared
that before next year half the inhabi
tants of the southern provinces of
Morocco will have perished by starva
vation and disease, on account of the
scarcity caused by drought.

San Francisco, Feb. 4. In the ease
of A. Weil et al vs. J. Kowlsky, bank
ropttfdge Wheeler to-day rendered
a decision of importance to the mer
cantile community. The suit against
defendant had been begun prior to
the repeal of the national bankrupt
law, and defendant had availed him
self of the benefits of the voluntary
bankrupt act of this state, and had
been discharged from his debts. The
court decided that defendant was dis
charged from all his liabilities.
Jacob Show, an old and well known
photographer, committed suicide this
morning by blowing his brains out.
The act is attributed to pecuuiary em
barrassment, as deceased had of late
been pushed for money, and was
not able to pay rent which fell
due to-day.
Long Lost Watch Found.
Washington County Indtpendent
Mr. N. J. Walker the other day
found a watch below Meyers' place
in the brush where W. G. Scoggin
lost it while driving cattle fifteen years
ago. It is a Geneva watch, and cost
Mr. S. $100, and it looks but little the
worse of its fifteen years' sleep. The.
works look bright and dry, indicating
that the watch must be air tight. Mr.
S. says if he had ten per cent interest
on it for the time it was lost he would
be satisfied.
