It is a healthy old review. Mr. D. Norcross of San Francisco, proceeded north from Astoria yester day, after a very pleasant sojourn here of three daya. He will return to his home via Victoria. Vessels in port now number fiix at Portland and twelve at Astoria a , proportion which it would be fair to -the producers of .the country to main tain during all future time. The Police court sentenced two inebriates to work on the streets Tes tcrday. If locals do not ease up a little, we shall be compelled to pub lish "drunks," as news items about these diggins. On Saturday the Cascades boats encountered light ice at the mouth of the Willamette, but it in no way pre reuted her breaking through. A special messenger from Tilla mook bay informs Mr. Larsen of the safe arrival there of the new schooner Honora. She sailed out on Wednes day, stood olT Tillamook all of Thurs day in a cairn, entered on Friday at 3 o'clock p. ar. Her cargo turned out in splendid condition. A correspondent writing from Washington, 18th, says: Hon. T. H. Brents, delegate elect from Washing ton territory, and Philip Bits., of Walla Walla, are here. Mr. Hoiman, of Portland, is here yet. The bill for his relief, which nassed the senate last session, has not been reached in the house. - Cornelius Yanderbilt began "busi ness with an old pirogue, running be tween Staten Island and New York, carrying garden stuff to market. With two or three thousand dollars raised from this source, he entered upon steadily-increasing enterprises until he amassed the enormous sum of $75,000, 000, when he died, leaving a family to tight over it. Astoria young men were playing base-ball yesterday on the square, and the forest birds were swelling their throats 'with musical notes, .all 'telling us of rthe mildness of the climate. Our poet was so struck that he invol untarily composed this: Can anyone say, This beautiful day, As they wander away, That they'd not rather stay In Oregon, on account of the weather? We congratulate our friend Hully Van Dusen and the .public at upper Astaria, and Henry C. Thompson, also the Oregon Steam Navigation Co. 1st Hully, because of his appointment as postmaster at upper Astoria; 2d the people, because that is a fact; 3d Mr. Thompson, because he has received the appointment of carrier; 4th, and lastly, the Oregon Steam Navigation company because they will never have reason to growl because of delays when attended by obliging men like Henry. It is stated upon apparently good authority that Jay Gould and his ad herents propose to nnss nnnn tht Idaho legislature at the present ses sion a scheme for bonding the terr" tory in the sum of $300,000 for the building of a railroad from some point on the Utah Northern to Boise city. The people of the southern counties appear to be very much taken up with the idea. Already the debt of the territory is 140,000, and with $300, 000 added, would be a burden not coveted, considering the limited popi lation. TheLewiston Teller consid ers the scheme a dangerous one, and urges the assembly to spurn the propo sition entirely. The Detroit Free press says: "Bad.p-er is nostmnstnr ;n Ttfir v;nsans, JJoxm Wisconsin. WVdf T 1 "t: i in .Delaware, and Elk in Illinois. OaU oil your dorgl" The Scientific American states that rapid and continuous action of the lower jaw will stoj bleeding of the nose. There are frequent in stances where such action has brought it on. Salem to Astoria Weekly Mercury, Jan. 81st. From the report of J. Q. A. Bowlby President of the Astoria Chamber of Commerce, we take the follewing: "Narrow gauge railroads are absorb ing much interest in different parts of the United States. It is claimed that they are much cheaper than the stand ard gauge, and yet able to do all the business except on the trunk lines. Such a road is in operation in Yam hill county, in this state. Companies have organized in several parts of our state for the purpose of building such roads in their respective localities Citizens of Astoria should -consider the matter of building such a road to Tualatin plains, in Washington coun ty, unless the 'Oregon Central Bail-'! road company very soon extends the McMinnville road this way. A narrow gauge would be peculiarity suited to the country lying between here and Forest Grove. It is thought by some that with a little liberal encourage ment U3 the people of Clatsop county, a company with ample means could be induced to build the road." This sug gestion is one of great importance to the people of thk vicinity. We be lieve such a road will be built within a few years, and with such assistance as citizens of Salem jean well. afford to give an enterprise which must be of incalculable benefit to tHiem, -may be accomplish in a very short time. Let the Springfield narrow gauge be con structed to Salem, cross the river at this place and connect with the pro posed Astoria road at Forest Grove, or some more suitable point, and the future of Salem is assured. A con tinuation of the Springfield and Salem road to Wnmemucca would then be only ti question of time and a very short time. The annual ice blockade in the Columbia and Willamette rivers and the frequent detention of vessels by grounding on the various bars in those rivers render some other means of -communication with the mouth of the Columbia a necessity to the people of this vallejT, and we think the sooner this matter is agiteted and the work begun the better. The project is a feasible one, and with the help of those localities which will bo raised from abroad to complete the undertak ing. No railroad enterprise now un der consideration by the people of the Willamette valley promises so much as this neof;a road to Astoria, and with reasonable liberality on the part of all concerned it can be built. The Coos Bay News says: "Sheriff Aiken can't understand how he re ceived $159 more than he was enti tled to, when he has never been paid at all. He wants the committee to send down the facts, or the 'filthy lucre," if it is all the same to them." There is something a little strange about this matter, sure. Sheriff Twilight of this city has paid his own expenses and not been paid by the state. Bro. Mercury, spoap 'n you probe this thing A little, A Stndy for Foreigners. Stray Gems. Troubles Comin g to Donation Claimants. Oregon City Enterprise, Jan. SO. Ve have been credibly inform ed by the recorder of the U. S. land office, at Oregon -city, Ore gon, that the Hon. R. B. Kiune, special agent of the laud depart ment, Washington city, D. C, has been detailed and authorized by the commissioner of the general land office to examine all the do - nation applications and proofs now on file in the several land offices in Oregon and "Washington territory and report to him the status, and condition of said do nation -land claims, as soon as he can properly examine the same. And eaid Kinne has been re quired to locate all donation claims on the maps and tract books in the local offices, and make copies of all the papers appertaining to each claim now on lile in the dif erertc local land offices in this state and Washington territory, and have the originals forwarded to the com missioner of the general land office, Washington city, D. C. Now it is known that the origi nal applications and proof of claim ants of donation land claims, have never been recorded and filed in the general land office until certi ficate is issued and -the original papers are forwarded for patent and patent issued. And as there has been several railroad grants for land; likewise wagon road grants, and .many other dispositions for the public land, it is highly necessary that the claimants of all donation land claims, who claim land under the act of con gress passed September 27, 1S50, and the amendments thereto, s'hould examine "tlheir proof and make application for their certifi cates of patent without further de la', so that their patents may be issued for the land claimed. It has been nearly thirty years since these claims were made, and many a proof is not complete, and nearly all require marriage proof and some additional proof of residence and cultivation, which may be difficult to make after twenty-live or thirty vears as the witnesses are fast dis appearing by death and removal. This may be done now with less trouble and expense than at any future period. The generation who applied for donation claims have many passed away, and a new generation will soon iake their place, then it will be almost impos sible to complete their ppoof. We would say to aU tHie pioneers, who by their sacrifices, toils and hard ships settled in these beautiful val deys of Oregon, to preserve and complete their title to their lands, which by their labor, industry and perseverance has attracted the at tention of the agriculturalist and manufacturers of the old continent, and is now attracting great excite ment throughout our whole west ern country. Weherefore advise you to make application for your certificates without delay. And see that your proof is all complete, that your patents may be issued, and your title be completed and thus be compensated for your labor. New York -is a strangely .consti tuted .city.
