(t J gft& 23&iX3 &staa&m ASlDOftlA. OREGON: . C. ntEKATHb Ertiter. T UESDAY , February 4, 1871) On XW8. There appears to be a popular no tion that the full support of news consists in the relation of new facts physical facts, so to speak, such as fights and foot-races, for example; that, therefore a newspaper is to be estimated by the burden of incidents with which it is loaded. Now, this idea is good enough, so far as it goes; nevertheless, it constitutes the low est possible estimate of a true news paper. A vast amount of the stuff published as news, and read as such, and even telegraphed up and down the country at great expense, says the Albany Register is, by every test of common sense, utterly worthless, for any useful purpose to the person who pay for it and read it. It helps him not one particle to understand better the relation which he sustains to the "business and duties of life, being profitless every way, therefore sense less neither improving the mind or the heart. JcTonor to Whom Honor is Due. Yaquina Corr. Corvallis Gazette. Newtort, Jan. 20. My atten tion has been called, by an editor ial in the Oregonian, to the con tinued and persistent course of that paper in ignoring the many efforts of Hon. J. H. Mitchell in behalf of important means affect ing the future welfare of Oregon. Several months previous to the last election, Scott would mention the introduction of bills by the "fjreat introducer," intimating that these bills were put in to catch votes; would never pass, etc. Let us see. A bill to survey the Co quille river; to survey Port Orford; xo survey Alsea bay; to survey cape Foul weather; to build a light house at Tillamook head; to re survey mouth of Columbia; to ap propriate money for canal and locks at Cascades; to appropriate money for lower Columbia; to ap propriate money for the upper Columbia; to appropriate money for improving the Willamette river, etc. All these much needed bills Senator Mitchell introduced, they were passed; the surveys foave been made, and tie appropriations have been expended, or are being expended, just as the people inter ested desired they should be; but Scott was not the man to say so. It was one of the .times that he failed to bore the public with his oditorial, "I told you so." And now the Hon. Senator's speeches are characterized by the Oregonian editor as shabby fustian, bombastic in style, and false in matter. This includes .Mitchell's speech on the appropriation for the Cas cades canal, and in fact covers all he has ever said, in behalf of Ore gon. After the Hon. Senator has been defeated, we find him earnest in his endeavors to secure the claims of every part of the state and it does seem but simple justice to -sustain him, even though -so. great a genius as H. W. Scott thinks otherwise. For eighteen months the Oregonian has been filled with spleen and vindictiveness. The editor seems to forget that that which keeps his own sore raw, dont trouble his readers. In fact, if he will not be so free with the medicine that soothes his pain, the public will feel kindlier towards Jiim, and take more stock in his far seeming statesmanship. Senator Mitchell has made a apeech, the first ever made for a harbor of rdfuge on the Pacific .coast. It may be lustian bombas tic in style, false in matter, but every California paper of promi nence or influence strong favor ed the bill. The Oreoronian has Been nothing important in it, nor is it likely that it will. Such meri torious measures are too small to attract mighty intellects like S :ott. 'It the bill fails the editor may make-it a pretext toay somet ling spiteful. I have no disposition to find fault with Mr. Scott for parading his-;grievances before the public, in the absence of anything else that is reasonable; but I do object to his -throwim? obstacles iirt the way of legislation for the b enefit of this young and growing state. 1 do not care who proposes, or advo cates a bill, or how bombastic in style the speech in favor of it may be, so long as some portion of the state demands it and is benefit ted Rialto. From the La Grande Gazette. Senator Mitchell seems deter mined to close up his present term of office with renewed efforts for Oregon. He has introduced bills into the senate fon S75,000 for the improvement of the upper Colum bia and Snake river, 40,000 for the upper 'Willamette, S100,000 for the construction of a breakwater and harbor of refuge on the Pa cific coast, $150,000 for the lower Willamette and Columbia between Portland and the sea, and $500,000 for the continuance of the con struction of the canal and locks at the Cascades. "We acknowledge the receipt of copies of the above named bills from the Senator. May Oregon never have a poorer, and it will be long before she has a better, senator than John H. Mitchell. The Cardiff Giant. It does not seem possible that this giant of Glamorgan on the Bristol could have found his way to this sec tion of country unless transformed to a sort of wandering Jew, yet Kellogg and Hopkins, of the Palouse Gazette, have the fragmentary evidence as follows. Mr. E. J. jSnrthcutt, of Woodward, has left at this office a collection of fossil bones, which were discovered while grading the new road from Wawawai to the hill north from Snake river. These fossils have the appear ance of having been a mammoth hu man being. From computations made it is estimated that the body was thirty-three feet in height, and weighed about five thousand pounds. The bones were found imbedded in solid rock, thirty feet under ground, in such a verr perfect condition as to leave no room to doubt their being human. Here is a rare study for scientists. What a fighting editor that fellow would have made. The Oregonian says that it was Geo. Bush's testimony Judge Deady aimed fro impeach in his denial of a new trial in the Griswold case. This statement anay have been necessary. January 14th the senate passed a bill to pay Henry C. DeAhna, late collector of customs at Sicka, Alaska, $3,500 for expenses in going to and returning from Alaska, he having been removed almost as soon as he reached his post of duty, so his salary covered only a small portion of his expenses.
