A boiler ex plosion occurred at Secor, Illinois, yes terday, in Gassner'a grist mill. The mill was instantaneously destroyed and four persons killed. Sax Antonio, Texas, Jan. 31. A party of Mexican bandits recently rob bed three women and two men on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, then bound them to trees and left them to starve. When found, buzzards were hovering around them. Three of the bandits were captured. Washington, Jan. 31. The third installment of the Mexican indemnity of $300,000 has been paid to the state department. The British minister has informed the department of state that pieuro pneumonia have been, detected in a cargo of cattle on the ship Ontario from Portland, that her majesty's government are considering whether they can retain the United States under exemption of part four of the fifth schedules of the act of 1878. The com missioners have officially notified the directors of the Odd Fellows' bank of their violation of its by-laws in passing the semi-annual dividend, and have also notified them to comply with the law in that respect. Should the no tification go unheeded, the attorney general will at once take legal steps to have the matter decided by the proper tribunal. St. Petersburg. Jan. 31. The ameer of Afghanistan has arrived on the Russian frontier. His followers were disarmed, and the ameer alone was allowed to retain his arms. The Russian authorities endeavored to persuade him that it would be useless to go to St. Petersburg, but the ameer insists, and unless prevailed upon to abandon his intention, may be expec ted to reach the Russian capital by the end of February, though every ef fort will be made to deter him. Ho appears to be astonished at his treat treatment. It is stated that Prof. Botkin, physi cian to the czar, advises the burning of Wettlianka, and other villages where the epidemic has broken out, together with all the furniture in them, and the removal of the inhabi tants to healthier places.
