The third convention of the Jewish order o B'nai Brith is in session here, attend ed by 250 deksgates, from all parts of the country, including California and, Oregon. The order comprise? the most prominent Israelites in the coun try. Among the subjects to be dis cussed -were the extent of educational facilities and the encouragement of emigration among eastern Jews to America. Wheeling, Jan. 26. An alarm of Ore to-night developed the fact that the books in the gas office had been saturated with petroleum and set on fire. They wero saved, but in a dam aged condition. Crookedness ift the gas business has been alleged recently, and the public mind is greatly excited over the occurrence this evening. Washington, Jan. 26.- -The report of the four members of die joint com mittee of the two houses of congress who favor transfer of the manage ment of Indian affairs from the in terior of the war department, is just completed by Representative Boone, and will be submitted to the house at the first opportunity. Senator Saun ders and others favored authorizing the president at his discretion to turn over to the war department, control of any tribe or tribes that might be in rebellion, or giving trouble; or such tribes as the president might thmk best at this time, and tint he was in favor of the Sioux being transferred at once with their reservation, and that such transfer shall not affect the schools or farming interests, etc. Foreign Dispatalies. A million pounds sterling is offered, which the sultan will probably accept. St. Petersburg, Jan. 27. The plague is reported near Moscow. The press here approves the proposed in ternational medical commission, de claring that the matter concerns hu manity at large.
