COMPROMISE.
Washington, Jan. 26. The house
committee on appropriations decline
to make public their intentions - con
cerning the proposed consolidation of
H'ttKe public surveys, but one .clause.
already inserted provides lor aoonsn-
mg all surveyor geueiai wmv,w
throughout the country, and for hav
ing the public land surveys executed
by corps of officers under the direct
control of a Washington bureau, to be
' ' known as the coast and interior sur
vey. The equal division of the joint
committee on the Indian transfer
question makes it certain that no
legislative provision for the proposed
transfer has any chance of passage
during the short remainder of the
present session.
In view of the great pressure of
other business Tuesday, on considera
tion of the anti-chinese immigration bill
will be demanded on its passage after
debate of only short duration. There
- is no need of any extended advocacy
of its provisions.
The president has signed the arrears
of the iension bill.
