Here Railroad Iron for Oregon.
H. L. Gregg & Co. have a vessel
on the berth in Philadelphia," the
clipper ship Tabor, loading with
railroad iron, etc., for the Colum
bia river, and they announce that
the Tabor will be followed by other
vessels, having contracted for sev
eral cargoes of railroad iron and
material, with the -option of load
ing part of vessels' capacity with
general cargo. Referring to this
business the Standard sars:
Mr. R. Koehler, agent for Ger
man capitalists who are interested
in the Oregon and California rail
road and Oregon Central railroad,
was called some months ago to
Frankfort-on-the-Main to report at
a meeting of the bondholders, upon
the general affairs of the road.
Mr. Koehler returned by the Ore
gon on her last trip. He confirms
the statement, that the bondhold
ers had decided to extend the Ore
gon Central railroad to Corvallis,
ctrom Saint Jo, in Yamhill county.
While in New York on his return
from Germany, Mr. Villard and
himself contracted for steel rails,
the same in pattern and weight &s
"those on the Central Pacific road
between Sacramento and San Fran
cisco, and for all the necessary roll
ing stock and motive power. The
rails were completed at the rolling
inills at Philadelphia on the 21st
inst., and will be shipped immedi
ately. Since his return Mr. Koeh
ler has contracted for ties, and has
put in the field a locating party,
which is now husy in the vicinity
of McMennville. The road will fjo
by way of Amity .and Dixie, Grad
ing' will commence as soon as right
of way is obtained.
"Renegades Pensioned upon Yakima.
We do not know who is respon
sible lor the outrage about to be
perpetrated upon eastern Washing
ton territory, by making that beau
tiful and fertile region known as
Yakima a sctft of Vandieman's
land for all the "scurvy scamps be
longing to thc iBhite and similar
tribes of California Indians, but of
one thing we feel quite confident,
that it is -a shamef e1 (proceeding.
What .are we to do with four or
dive hundred ugly customers like
these? We wish we could agree
fully with Bro. Hand, in the con
cluding "remarks of the following
paragraph from the Mountaineer,
.but we fear that it will be a very
doubtful and dangerous thin? to
wait for the settlement ef the ceun
. try to bring about such results, in
view of present difficulties in east
ern Oregon and Yashington terri
tory. The Mountaineer -says:
The Indians we mentioned re
cently as being en route from Camp
Harney to this place are expected
to arrive on Five-mile creek on
Friday next, and as soon as arrange
ments can be made will be brought
to town or vicinity- These Indians
number about -00, biq and little.
A portion of them are -"prisoners
of r;pted by Ge& H j
;ird last summer, and the others are
members of TTinnenracca's band,
whose brother accompanies th 2 ex
pedition. The advance agent of this
circus is our old friend, Jame 2sr.
Clark, of Grant county, from whom
wc receive an account of the trip.
-Mx. Clark has been preceding the
outfit a few days to purchase the
necessary supplies of wood, beef,
hay and grain. lie succeedel in
making his purchases at very reas
onable figures, excepting only in
one or two instances. The outfit
c msists of about iCO Indians, two
Companies of cavalry, sixty wag
ons, with as many teamsters.
Air,
'Clark says the Indians are fat and I tieCbElkcM
Jieartj, and appear to enjoy thc!sS
journe3r very much. While
camped on the John Day river he
noticed a number of young bucks
in swimming. The river was
frozen along the shore, extending
out ten or twelve feet, and the lit
tle fat fellows would take a run and
slide on the ice on their bellies off
into the water. The objective
point of the destination of the out
lit is in the Yakima reservation,
over in Washington territory, but
for some cause it will remain here
for a while. What object the
government can have in moving
these Indians to the Yakima reser
vation is more than we can under
stand, unless it is in case of an
Indian war, the Indians will all be
together, and thereby better able
to protect themselves. However,
in a few more years this vexed
question in this section of "What
will we do with the Indian?" will
be settled, and it will not be by
either the interior or the war de
partments, but by the great rush
of immigration, the same as it was
settled in California and southern
Oregon in early days.
We do not consider that it is
any mark of patriotism, nor the
part of any citizen, to furnish sup
plies to any such outfit as the
above in passing through the coun
try so lately devastated in part by
the scoudrels, and if settlers along
the line had refused supplies, or
placed the figures so high that
the agent of this circus would
have been compelled to report
an enormous expense in conse
quence of the plan, perhaps the
authors of it would have been more
careful in future. It is barely pos
sible that coming events mav cause
us to change our opinion in refer
ence to this matter, but at present
writing it appears to be one of the
most grossly ignorant, and con
temptible acts ever perpetrated
upon an honest community. Were
there no lands in California, Neva
da, or Arizona, for this caravan of
murderous villains. Why are they
sent here to become a pest to
settlers in the best portions of
America? We pause for a reply.
