Association We are pleased to see that the fra ternity of Odd Fellows in Astoria have taken steps to secure ground and erect a hall. The books for subscription to the stock of the association are now open at the office of Hon. I. W. Case, and we understand that the prospects are favorable to a speedy taking of stock sufficient to insure the success of the movement. At a recent meeting of stockholders, to perfect the organi zation, directors were elected as fol fel fol eows: Capt. G. Reed, Hon. I. W. Case, Judge J. Q. A. Bowlby, Capt. J. H. D. Gray, C. H. Bain, A. J. Meglcr, C. S. Wright. These names ouht to be considered sufficient guar antee of wise and judicious manage ment in the association. They are all careful, competent, and successful men of business. We kne7: from past experience, and it is the experience of others, that money invested in enter prises of this character are alirays safe and reliable investments. It may not pay largely at first; indeed, it may be some time before bona fide dividends are received, bat we need only to point to Portland, to Oregon city, and elsewhore, to show that in such cases the money has proven to be not only saved by the investment, but has in a brief period of time paid much more liberal interest than when invested in almost any other way. We hope to see uvcry man who has an interest in the order, every brother who lias $25 or more to spare from their earn ings, putting their surplus balances into this stock. ITho.se Business 3 it? The Paul Pry style of news gossips are all agog now concerning the Walla Walla railroad. One says: It is rumored on the street that Br. Baker and Messrs. Ainsworth, Ladd & Co. have been unable to conclude the transfer of the Walla Walla and Columbia river railroad. Which par tr fails io come to the scratch has not transpired. If the sale is not complet ed we do not think our people will feel very sorry. No matter how much they may and do feel like condemning the way Dr. Baker has managed asid charged for the use of his road, they cannot help feeling very grateful to him for building it, and giving them the advantages of ample and speedy communication with navigation. They also feel that if the proposed sale is not concluded that the result will be a war between capitalists for the con trol of the transportation of this rapidly growing country. Among the possibilities are the construction of a rival road from this place to the river and the placing of an opposition line of steamers on the Columbia. In fact one or both of these events muet soon follow the failure to sell. Neither Dr. Baker nor the proposed purchas ers, who are the heavy men of the Oregon Steam Navigation company, can afford to longer continue the re lations hitherto existing. The -Oregon Steam Navigation company must strive to control the approaches of the Columbia, and Dr. Baker raid as sociates must have boats on the river, or they must unite. They cannot af ford to be at cross purposes. As long as they occupy their present Dositions Z7La i 7 3 "f lIlcamJ armed neutrality; each watches the other; each plans to get the best of the situation; both unfriendly and either liable at anv moment to declare ,""! ench " So producers and shippers are co as the lppers are concerned they would all prefer to see -the pro posed bargin fall through. Another, which made it itedmsiness tosift the matter says: We cannot find, upon inquiry at headquarters, any truth in 'the report that any hitch has occurred in the sale of the Walla Walla and Columbia river railroad from Dr. Bitker to the j Oregon Steam Navigation company. From the-terrible scourge of diph theria, which is counting its victims by thousands all over the north, and which is robbing many a household of its dearest treasures, even in healthy Oregon, Coos county .has been entirely exempt, says the News.
