Washington. Jan. 22. The house
committee on. public lands to-day
agreed to recommend the passage of
Luttrell's bill providing for the isbu.
ance of scrip to owners of the Oregon
wagon road grant of July 2d, 1864,
for a number of acres equal to the
quantity of lands within the limits of
said grant subsequently embraced in
the Klamath Indian reservation. The
proposed scrip is to bo locatable on
any unoccupied and unappropriated
public lands not mineral, whether sur
veyed or unsurveyed. It can be used
apparently just like Valentino scrip,
and the amount called for by the terms
of the bilJ, though not stated, is un
derstood to be very large.
The senate to-day passed a bill to
declare certain lands granted the Pa
cific railroad companies by acts of
1862 and 1864, subject to taxation by
the states and territories in which they
may be located.
Omaha, Jan. 22. There is an op--pressive-glutof
gold in this city, and
bankers complain that they cannot get
rid of it,people preferring currency and
bringing it back as soon as they can,
vhen forced to take it. A correspond
ent in Chicago of the Omaha national
bank has refused to pay expressage on
balances, and it threatens to be an ex
pensive article. The testimony on
this point is unanimous, and one rea
son of the over supply is, that gold
comes in rapidly from the west, mainly
from San Francisco. It is a fact that
the Omaha banks are now paying
their exchange as between themselves
in gold, a thing never dreamed of be
fore. San Francisco, Jan. 21. The ex
amination of W. G. Stedman, bucket
shop man, began in the rjolice court
this afternoon. It was shown that the
first five weeks Stedman did business
his profits were over $18,000. The
day before the failure he took in $11,
C00, and claims he paid out $17,000.
The testimony for the prosecution was
mainly of persons who paid money for
privileges; and for defense, that all
money taken in was paid out to lucky
guessers of the market. The case will
go on again to-morrow.

CUURCn DIRECTORY.
The export of Orpgon, snys the Cen
tennial circular of 1876; average S378 00 to
every man in the state. It is mo?e than
that now, annually. Oregon wheat, wool
Flour, Salmon, Fruits, and vegetables,
command from 5 to 10 per cent, higher
price than those from any other country
with a population of40,00ftmen herexDort
equals onepeventh of the total export of
uie unuea mates, xruiy, sucn a state is
not a poor state to live in.
In the preparation of the following-statistical
tables we have spared neither pains
nor labor. We havesouaht and procured
information from every buurce, and have
at labt what we believe to be a reliable
showing of all the Wheat and Flour ex
ports of Oregon by annual seasons, since
August 1S68. Statistical information of
this kind can only be obtained correctly
at a point where all vessels going out of
the Columbia river may bo spoken, after
they are fully loaded. Correct and relia
ble information of this sort we. expeefcto
give more fully if possible in future than
in the past, thus making The Astorian
the reliable paper of the Shipping Statis
tics of Oregon. These tables will be fol
lowed by other?, detailing the general
commercial features of each succeeding
harvest year!

What we Like. To hear a man try
to borrow his neighbors paper. And the
neighbor have courage enough to reply:
"1 would as soon lone you my tooth
brush;'5 to have a party imagine that
he can do as much business without ad
vertising as he can with it; to look at
the blank astonishment that settles
down on that man's face when, after
trying: a month, he finds th.tt it cannot
be done ; to see a man refuse to take his
local paper and all the time sponge on his
neighbor for the use of his ; to hear 'a
man comnlaih when we ask him to sub
scribe for his home paper, that he takes
more papers now than lie can read, aim
then go around and borrow his neigh
bor's or loaf about him until begets the
news from it; to see a man run down
his home paper as not worth taking, and
every now and then beg the editor for a
lavor in the editorial line; to see a man
refuse to advertise in a home paper,
and then try and get a share of trade
that the paper k instrumental in bring
ing to his door; to see a man who Is able
to pay for his local paper, always man
age to be around in time to read it at the
expense c a friend not worth the tenth
part oP-'what he himself is, it looks so
economical, thrifty, and progressive,
you know. .
j&SAn advertisement in a newspa

other foolish imitations. The paper is
seen every dav by hundreds, while the

it is natural to suppose that he who

our trade. The familiar advertisements
