PROSPECT OF THE SWINDLE PASSING CONGRESS. PACIFIC RAILROAD LANDS TO BE TAXED. TOO 3IUCH GOLD IN OilAHA. THE BUCKET-SHOP CASE IN SAN FRANCISCO. Washington. Jan. 22. The house committee on. public lands to-day agreed to recommend the passage of Luttrell's bill providing for the isbu. ance of scrip to owners of the Oregon wagon road grant of July 2d, 1864, for a number of acres equal to the quantity of lands within the limits of said grant subsequently embraced in the Klamath Indian reservation. The proposed scrip is to bo locatable on any unoccupied and unappropriated public lands not mineral, whether sur veyed or unsurveyed. It can be used apparently just like Valentino scrip, and the amount called for by the terms of the bilJ, though not stated, is un derstood to be very large. The senate to-day passed a bill to declare certain lands granted the Pa cific railroad companies by acts of 1862 and 1864, subject to taxation by the states and territories in which they may be located. Omaha, Jan. 22. There is an op--pressive-glutof gold in this city, and bankers complain that they cannot get rid of it,people preferring currency and bringing it back as soon as they can, vhen forced to take it. A correspond ent in Chicago of the Omaha national bank has refused to pay expressage on balances, and it threatens to be an ex pensive article. The testimony on this point is unanimous, and one rea son of the over supply is, that gold comes in rapidly from the west, mainly from San Francisco. It is a fact that the Omaha banks are now paying their exchange as between themselves in gold, a thing never dreamed of be fore. San Francisco, Jan. 21. The ex amination of W. G. Stedman, bucket shop man, began in the rjolice court this afternoon. It was shown that the first five weeks Stedman did business his profits were over $18,000. The day before the failure he took in $11, C00, and claims he paid out $17,000. The testimony for the prosecution was mainly of persons who paid money for privileges; and for defense, that all money taken in was paid out to lucky guessers of the market. Statistical information of this kind can only be obtained correctly at a point where all vessels going out of the Columbia river may bo spoken, after they are fully loaded. Correct and relia ble information of this sort we. expeefcto give more fully if possible in future than in the past, thus making The Astorian the reliable paper of the Shipping Statis tics of Oregon.
