UNITED STATES SENATORS
ELECTED.
ROYALITY IN DISGUISE
"TRAVELING INCOGS."
"Washington, Jan. 21. In execu
tive session of the senate this after
noon, Edmunds delivered an elaborate
speech in advocacy of the resolution
submitted by him, which provides
for the termination of so much
of the treaty of Washington as
relates to fisheries, by giving the
notice required by its provisions.
The resolution was referred to the for
eign relations committee. According
to present appearances, it will be
adopted by the senate without oppo
sition, and President Hayes will
promptly thereafter give the required
notice to the government of Great
Britain.
New York, Jan. 2L A Queenstown
telegram says that there is no chance
of saving the steamship Oberon, from
New Orleans for Liverpool, and strand
ed off Kinsale. A certain amount of
cotton and oil-cake has been saved.
It is blowing a gale and rain is falling
in torrents.
San Francisco, Jan. 22.-The fol
lowing persons have been elected to
Beats in the- United States senate by
theirvarious state legislatures yester
day: J. Don Cameron, Pennsylvania;
Roscoe Conkling, New York; 0. H.
Prall, Connecticut; Dan Yoorhees, In
diana; John A. Logan, Hlinois; Wil
kinson Call, Florida; Gen. James
Shields for the short term, and G. G.
Vest for the long term in Missouri.
Toronto, Jan. 21. The governor
general and Princess Louise, traveling
incog., arrived to-day at Niagara falls.
"The Bible is a strange book,"
said an infidel objector to an aged
minister. "A wonderful book," was
the reply. "It has some strange char
acters among its saints," said the ob
iector: "such as David and Solomon.
If such men lived in our day we would
say that they deserved to bo sent to
state prison for life." "Worse than
that," replied the minister. "If they
got what they deserved they would be
sent to hell forever. But you prob
ably are mistaken as io the object of
the Bible. It is not meant to show
how good men are, but to show how
the grace of God brings salvation to
the very worst of men, and makes
saints out of the vilest sinners."
Dress Cutting and Fitting.
liss E. C. Benedict bes respectfully
to inform the ladies of Astoria and vi
cinity that she may be found at the resi
dence of Mrs. T. S. Jewett, corner of
Astor and Cass streets, opposite the Con
gregational church, prepared to teach
Mrs. E. K. linker's system of dress cut
tine: and fitting, which is considered by
judges to be the best system known, as
by it the skirt as well as the waist is
inade perfectly fitting.
Keep your blood pure and your
health must be good, the great purifier

Astoria druggists have it now.
....Mr. A. II. Sale authorizes us to
offer a reward of $10 00 for evidence
which will lead to the arrest and con
viction of the person or persons who
took his boat "Josephine" from the old
mill landing on Youngs bay and left it
on the tide land above Richardson s
place. The act was committed on or
about January llth, or 12th, 1879.

OREGON EXPORTS.
REWIEW of SllirXESTS FOREIGN AKJ.
DOMESTIC, for TEX YEARS.
The export of Oregon, says the Cen
tennial circular of 1870, average $37S 00 to
every man in the state. It is more than
that now, annually. Oregon wheat, wool
Flour, Salmon, Fruits, and vegetables,
command from 5 to 10 per cent, higher
price than thoe from any other country
TT-ith q rrminfmn oMO.000 men her export
equal one seventh of the total export of
the United State-.. Truly, such a suite is
not a poor state to live in.
In the preparation of the following sta
tistical tables we have spared neither pain;
nor labor. "We have sought and procured
information from every source, and have
at last what we believe to be a reliable
showing of all the Wheat and Flourex
ports of Oregon by annual season, since
August 1S6S. Statistical information of
this kind can only be obtained correctly
at a point where all vessels going out of
the Columbia river mav be spoken, after
they are fullv loaded. Correct ana relia
ble information of this sort we expect to
give more fully if po-sible in future than
in the past, thus making Tin: Astorian
the reliable paper of the Shipping Statis
tics ot Oregon. These tables will be fol
lowed bv others, detailing the general
commercial features of each tucceeGing
harvest year:
Tables showing the total Exports to all
